Bronchos Open National Duals With Win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 10) – Heath Gray and Christian Arriola scored bonus-point wins as No. 6-ranked Central Oklahoma toppled No. 16 Colorado School of Mines 28-7 Friday morning in the first round of the 2020 U.S. Marine Corps/National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II National Duals.

The Bronchos won eight of the 10 matches in improving to 4-0 and advancing to a quarterfinal showdown with No. 3-rated Notre Dame College at 2 p.m. (Oklahoma time) at the Kentucky Expo Center. A win there would put UCO in Saturday morning's semifinals.

"I thought our guys were a little sluggish, but we advanced and that's the main thing," head coach Todd Steidley said. "We've got a tough one coming up against Notre Dame and will need to be at our best."

Gray notched his 16th straight win – and eight consecutive bonus victory – with a 12-1 major decision at 184 pounds. The second-ranked junior standout recorded four takedowns and had nearly four minutes riding time in the rout.

Arriola scored an early takedown in the final match at heavyweight and got the fall at the 2:40 mark. It was the first-ever dual appearance for the redshirt freshman.

Central also got wins from 125 Tanner Cole, 141 Nate Keim, 149 Brik Filippo, 157 Ty Lucas, 174 Gage McBride and 197 Dalton Abney.

Cole had a pair of takedowns in an easy 6-0 shutout, Keim's two escapes were the difference in a 4-2 win and Filippo held off a late takedown try in a 3-2 triumph. McBride cruised 9-3 behind a three-takedown attack and Abney pulled out a 5-4 win on an escape with 16 seconds left in the match.

The Bronchos suffered a blow at 165 where sixth-rated Dayton Garrett suffered an early knee injury. He was able to finish the match, but has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament.
