Bronchos Crush Newman 52-0

Central Oklahoma Wins All 10 With Bonus Points In Big MIAA Rout

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma beat Newman 52-0 Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House winning all 10 matches with bonus points in running the Broncho home win streak to 28 consecutive duals.

UCO is 4-1 on the season and already 2-0 in the MIAA. Wednesday marked the 28th consecutive win in league duals as well for the Bronchos.

"Everyone wrestled well," UCO head coach Todd Steidley said. "From the first to the last, we were aggressive and did a good job of scoring and taking care of business. It's been almost two weeks since our last dual and the guys didn't show any sign of having time off. It was a good night overall."

Guy Clevenger got the night started with a fall at 125 and after Jason Henschel's major decision at 133, Josh Taylor followed with a second fall at 141 to give UCO an early 16-0 lead heading into the 149-pound match, which Newman was set to forfeit. Jaxon Koeltzow accepted the win for the Bronchos.

Now heading to 157 up 22-0, Gabe Johnson and Bryce Dauphin posted back-to-back technical falls to increase the rout to 32-0.

Hunter Jump recorded UCO's third fall of the night at 174, then Branson Britten and Garrett Wells also posted back-to-back tech. falls at 184 and 197 before Ryan Nichols capped the night off with a major decision at heavyweight to make it the final, 52-0.

UCO scored in bunches and Newman recorded just three takedowns on the night. Clevenger was taken down twice in his match and trailed 10-6 in the third period before a reversal and pin at the 5:39 mark. Newman didn't record another offensive point until heavyweight, when Nichols found himself down 3-0 in the opening period. He escaped, earned a takedown himself, and then a four-point nearfall gave him a 8-3 lead on his way to the 14-5 major.

Henschel took a 3-0 lead to the second period and a 5-0 lead to the third before earning a 10-0 major. Taylor recorded his fall in 3:42.

Johnson put on a clinic at 157, scoring an early takedown and two four-point nearfalls for an early 11-0 lead. He cut his opponent, took him down again, then repeated to get the 17-2 tech. fall in 2:42. The win marked the 50th bonus-point victory for Johnson in his career at Central.

Dauphin spent a little more time getting the same result. He led 7-0 after the first, then 10-0 going to the third. A reversal and made it 12-0 and a late takedown made it 16-1 with 41 seconds remaining in the match.

Jump, like Johnson, wasted no time working on Wednesday night. He pinned his opponent in 2:07. Britten, like Dauphin, waited until the third period before scoring 13 late points to earn a 20-2 technical fall. Wells' tech. fall came at the 4:57 mark, ahead 18-1.

Central Oklahoma had 11 days off following a 33-3 win over McKendree Nov. 22 in Edmond. The Bronchos will now wait until Dec. 13 before returning to action at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis.
