Britten Title Leads UCO To Third-place Finish at Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Branson Britten captured the 184-pound title to finish off a dominating weekend and lead Central Oklahoma to a third-place finish in the prestigious Midwest Classic Sunday.

The third-seeded Britten won three matches on the final day of the huge 47-team tournament that is Division II's toughest regular-season event, capped by an 8-1 finals win over top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Keegan Gehihausen of Chadron State.

The Bronchos also got a third-place finish from 197 Garrett Wells, while 149 Cole Mayfield took fourth, 174 Hunter Jump fifth and 165 Bryce Dauphin seventh. UCO – which was without four starters – ended with 113 points.

Wisconsin-Parkside took the team title with 150 points, 18 points ahead of runner-up Pittsburgh-Johnstown. The Bronchos were third, with Gannon and Tiffin tying for fourth with 109 points.

"It was a good weekend for us and I'm proud of the way the team battled," head coach Todd Steidley said. "We had some guys really come through and we won a lot of big matches. I thought as a team we took a big step toward where we want to be at the end of the season."

Britten led the way.

The senior transfer cruised to two easy wins Saturday and then opened Sunday with an 8-0 shutout in the quarterfinals. He followed with a 5-1 semifinal triumph over second-seeded Patrick Johnson of Gannon before using a pair of takedowns to slide past Gehihausen in the gold medal match.

Wells opened Sunday with an 11-2 major decision, then suffered his first loss of the season in the semifinals against fifth-seeded Nicholas Johnson of Glenville State. The top-seeded junior bounced back with two consolation wins, capped by a third-period fall in the third-place bout.

Mayfield earned consecutive bonus-point wins to start his final day, then picked up two straight medical forfeits in making the consolation finals. The true freshman lost that match, but still went 6-2 on the weekend in his first-ever varsity action.

The seventh-seeded Jump knocked off No. 2 seed Lawson Losee of Upper Iowa 2-1 in the tiebreaker to make the semifinals, but then lost two straight. He rebounded with a 4-1 win over top-seeded and defending national champion Cole Ritter of Maryville to take fifth.

The unseeded Dauphin lost 4-1 in sudden victory to No. 3 Broady Hemauer of Wisconsin-Parkside 4-1 in the quarterfinals to open the day. He came back with a major decision before falling in the consolation quarterfinals, but ended the tournament with a 9-5 win to claim seventh.

UCO returns to Edmond to host Maryville at 7 p.m. Friday in its final dual of the first semester.
