Bronchos Place Nine In Open Division At OCU Open

OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 9) – A trio of runner-up finishes led a group of nine placers for Central Oklahoma in the Open Division of the OCU Open Saturday.

Cody Karstetter (125 pounds), Brik Filippo (149) and Gage McBride (174) all finished second for the Bronchos, while 141 Nate Keim, 149 Zachary Moore and 184 Heath Gray came in third. Tanner Cole (125), Dayton Garrett (165) and Kalin Winkler (197) all placed fourth.

UCO also had four placers in the Freshman-Sophomore Division, led by Logan Farrell's title-winning effort at 133. Hunter Jump (165) and J.T. Stambeck (174) had runner-up finishes and 197 David Wright took fourth. Farrell, Jump and Stambeck all competed unattached.

"Overall it was a pretty good day for us," head coach Todd Steidley said. "We lost a few matches that could have gone either way, but I thought we competed hard. A lot of guys got some good mat time, which is what we needed."

Karstetter opened his day with a second-period fall and 8-0 major decision before falling in the finals to Oklahoma State's Nick Piccininni, who is ranked fourth in Division I.

Filippo outscored his first three opponents by a combined 38-2 in recording a technical fall and two major decisions to make the finals, where he lost to OSU's third-ranked Boo Lewallen.

McBride followed a first-round bye with a first-period fall and 11-0 major decision before dropping a 6-1 finals decision to OSU's Gavin Stika.

Keim rebounded from an opening-round loss with four consolation wins, pulling out a 7-5 sudden-victory decision in the third-place bout.

Moore started his day with back-to-back falls before dropping a 6-2 semifinal decision to Lewallen. He bounced back with two consolation wins to claim third.

Gray dominated after falling in the first round 8-4 to OSU's Dakota Geer, coming back with four bonus-point wins. He started with a 17-2 technical fall and then had three straight major decisions, capped by a 19-5 rout in the consolation finals.

Garrett went 4-2 with three falls in his fourth-place finish.

Farrell won four close matches in taking the crown at 133, capped by a 6-5 finals victory over Laif Jones of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
