Paola Landin and Nikki Boyar Win ITA Doubles Regional

OKLAHOMA CITY – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team is sending its doubles team of Paola Landin and Nikki Boyar to the national finals after the duo put together a dominating performance at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional this weekend at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

Landin and Boyar went a perfect 5-0 to capture their first regional championship.

"I'm so proud of those two for all of their hard work and their efforts this weekend," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "This is a very tough field and a very tough tournament. They worked really hard and deserve this."

Landin, a junior from Los Cabos, Mexico, and Boyar, a sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, cruised through the first day of competition. The duo won 8-0, 8-4, and 8-3 to reach the semifinals. After switching to a two-set format, the duo continued to power through. Landin and Boyar won 6-4, 6-3 over Harding's Riley Cox and Hana Flose to reach the championship match.

Central would be tested there however. Facing a fellow Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe in Washburn's Logan Morrissey and Svea Crohn, Landin and Boyar dropped the first set, 6-4. But a 6-2 win in the second set kept the Bronchos alive. And it was all UCO, 10-4, in the third and final set to send the Broncho duet to the national finals.

Eight regional champion doubles teams advanced out of this weekend's various regional tournaments across the country. They will all descend upon Rome, Ga. Oct. 17-20 and battle for the ITA Cup.

Central Oklahoma had more success at the ITA Regional this weekend. Landin went 3-1 in the singles top flight. She won her first three matches without surrendering more than two points in any set. That got her to the quarterfinals of the tournament before her run ended there. Boyar also won her first match before losing in the Round of 32.

Isabella Dunlap, who won the ITA Singles Regional in 2018, also won her first three matches of the tournament this weekend. Dunlap never allowed more than three points in any set. She finished the tournament 3-1.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to send some of its squad to the Oral Roberts Invite next week, while Landin and Boyar prepare for nationals.
