UCO Falls to Orediggers On Criteria

KEARNEY, Neb. (Jan. 19) – Heath Gray, Colton Looper and Greg Wilson all won tight matches down the stretch to give Central Oklahoma a chance, but the No. 18-ranked Bronchos lost on criteria to Colorado School of Mines Saturday morning in the Midwest Duals.

UCO and the Orediggers finished in a 21-21 tie after the back-and-forth dual before Mines earned an extra point on criteria C for having the most total match points (32-31) to pick up the win. Mines improved to 11-1, while the Bronchos fell to 8-3.

Central trailed 21-12 with three matches left before winning out to pull even. Gray prevailed in a wild 13-9 battle at 184 pounds, Looper claimed a clutch 7-5 sudden-victory decision at 197 and Wilson held on for a 4-3 triumph in the final bout.

But in the end, it wasn't enough.

"Our big guys gave us a chance at the end and we just came up a little short," head coach Todd Steidley said. "We lost a couple of tough matches early and that put us in a bind. It's a tough loss and hopefully we can learn from it."

Tanner Cole fell in overtime at 125 and Nate Keim lost a 4-3 decision at 141 as the Bronchos fell behind 12-0 after the first three weights. Brik Filippo got UCO on the scoreboard with a stunning 11-second fall at 149, but Mines answered with a pin of its own at 157 to go up 18-6.

Wyatt Jordan came back with first-period fall at 165 to make it 18-12 and another Mines win at 174 had the Bronchos down 21-12 to set up the late rally that fell just short.

Central opens a three-match homestand next Saturday, hosting No. 19 Western Colorado at 2 p.m.
