Isabella Dunlap Wins ITA Regional Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY - Isabella Dunlap and Nikki Boyar both won their respective singles draws at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional this weekend at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. Dunlap's regional title in the Singles A Draw earned the freshman a spot in the ITA National Championships next month.

"I'm really proud of these two," head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "You got to realize both of those girls are freshman and they just won a tournament against some of the best talent in the country. They aren't scared of anything and I'm really proud of the way they came out and fought."

Dunlap moves on to the next stage toward becoming a national champion. She'll head to the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga. Oct. 11-14. Boyar is the second Broncho to win the Singles B Draw in the last two years. Teammate Alix Williams won the regional title in 2017.

Dunlap went 6-0 this weekend to clinch the championship. She beat Kami Ward of Arkansas Tech 6-2, 6-2 on Friday in the first round of the regional, and followed that up with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Nebraska-Kearney's Bhavya Ramineni.

Saturday, Dunlap beat Southwest Baptist's Diana Cabrera 6-3, 6-4 and then topped Harding's Rylie Cox 6-0, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals.

The competition grew tougher, as did Dunlap. The freshman beat Washburn's Jacqueline Engelbrecht 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 to clinch a spot in the championship. And after losing the first set 6-0 to SBU's Jill Van den Dungen, she responded with a huge 7-6 win in the second set and then cruised to a 6-0 win the final frame to win the regional championship.

Boyar went 5-0 on her way to a B Draw title. She beat Lara Peco of Upper Iowa 6-0, 6-1 on Friday in the Round of 32. She then outlasted Emma Warnock of Northeastern State (6-3, 6-2) and Julie Rinderknech of Northwest Missouri (6-1, 6-2) to reach the semis.

Boyar beat Northwest's Sara Grozdanovic 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the title match before beating Washburn's Maria Valverde 6-2, 6-4 there.

Both Dunlap and Boyar were still competing in doubles competition following their singles titles. Dunlap, with teammate Paola Landin, made the Doubles A Draw finals before falling to Washburn's Alexis Czapinski and Logan Morrissey 2-6, 6-2, 4-10. Boyar and teammate Sarah Van Eeckhoudt made the B Draw Doubles semifinals before losing to Augustana's Anca Rusu and Grace Goble.
