Bronchos Win MIAA Regular Season Title

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Northwest Missouri 8-3 Sunday afternoon, winning the regular season Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship and earning the No. 1 seed in next week's postseason tournament.

The Bronchos, 33-17 on the season and 25-11 in the MIAA, split the title with Northwest Missouri, who finished 30-20 and 25-11. UCO will be the No. 1 seed in the MIAA Tournament next week in Warrensburg, Mo. and play fourth-seeded Northeastern State at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 10.

"This was fun, coming down to the last game of the season, but stressful too," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "It's great for the 25 seniors on our roster to play their last game on this field and it be for the conference championship. That made it fun."

Martin earned more than just the top seed for his Bronchos. The third-year head coach won his 100th career game Sunday.

"That's just a testament to these players and what they do," Martin said. "They do all the work so they deserve the credit."

Central did Sunday what had worked for them all weekend - putting the bat on the ball early and often. The Bronchos scattered 15 hits Sunday afternoon. It put 45 balls in play this weekend in outscoring the Bearcats a combined 33-12.

Jake Dyer and Kyle Miskovsky, 1-2 hitters for the Bronchos, combined to go 6-for-8 with four runs batted in and three runs scored. Dyer hit his 50th career double and Miskovsky blasted a three-run home run for the Broncho offense.

T.J. Sparr and Xavier Freeman also hit home runs for the Central offense Sunday.

Austin Lambright got the win for the Bronchos in a relief effort to improve to 4-1 on the season. J.D. Cameron had a strong start for UCO, going 4 1/3 with five strikeouts and five hits allowed. He left the game with a zero on the Northwest Missouri side of the scoreboard.

Lambright threw two innings, allowed two runs on three hits. Junior Obeso and Josh Rutland also threw relief innings to lead the Bronchos to victory.

Central is co-champs of the MIAA after winning 25 league games this season. The Bronchos have not finished this high since joining the league six years ago. Central will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament thanks to winning two out of three against Northwest Missouri, as well as 2 of 3 against Central Missouri, which is hosting the tournament.
