Bronchos Fall In First Round of MIAA Tourney

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (May 10) – Central Oklahoma's offense failed to materialize and now the Bronchos have a long road ahead if they hope to capture the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament title.

Top-seeded UCO had three hits in taking a 1-0 first-inning lead but managed just four more the rest of the way in falling to eighth-seeded Northeastern State 4-2 in a first-round contest Thursday afternoon at Crane Stadium/Topkins Field.

The regular season league co-champion Bronchos (33-18) will take on Nebaska-Kearney in an elimination contest at 12:30 p.m. Friday.  UCO must win five straight games – one Friday, two Saturday and two Sunday – to come back and claim the tournament crown.

"We had a few chances and just didn't make enough things happen at the plate," head coach John Martin said.  "It's disappointing we weren't more ready to play.  We put ourselves in a big bind, but all we can do is put this behind us and try to get back in the tournament one game at time."

Central tried to pull off a memorable comeback in its final at bat and a diving catch preventing the Bronchos from doing just that.

UCO trailed 4-1 entering its final at bat and Xavier Freeman started the inning with a walk before Glenn Reeves followed with a pinch-hit single to right field.  Taylor Avila's one-out pinch-hit single to center field pushed across a run and brought up lead-off hitter Kyle Miskovsky.

Miskovsky had doubled and tripled earlier in the game and his long drive to left-center field appeared destined to hit the gap, scoring two runs.  But NSU's center fielder made a long sprint to get to the ball and he made a sensational head-long dive to pull in the ball for the second out.

The Bronchos still had its leading home run hitter coming up, but Paul Kropf grounded out to end the game and the RiverHawks secured the upset.

UCO broke on top in the bottom of the first when Miskovsky led off with his first triple of the season and scored one out later on Dayne Sommer's single up the middle.  Trae Smith followed with a double to put runners on second and third with one out, but the Bronchos couldn't punch across another score.

Xavier Warren had a spectacular run-saving play in the top of the second to keep the Bronchos on top.  The speedy senior center fielder raced into the left-center field and made a diving grab of a sinking line drive to prevent an NSU runner on second from scoring.

The RiverHawks moved in front to stay in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits and a hit batter to go ahead 3-1 and it stayed that way until NSU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

UCO had only one hit from the second through seventh innings and the Bronchos struck out 10 times.  Miskovsky and Sommer had two hits apiece.

Junior Obeso had a fine relief outing on the mound, pitching 3 2/3 shutout innings to keep UCO close.  Ryan LeMoine took the loss, starting and giving up three runs on five hits in the first four innings.
