No. 18 UCO Splits Sunday Doubleheader

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team split a doubleheader against Missouri Western, taking a 5-4 walk-off win before falling 4-1 in the second game of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Wendell Simmons Field Sunday afternoon.

Central Oklahoma, ranked 18th in the country in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 30, moves to 31-15 on the season overall, and are now 23-9 in league play. The Bronchos are tied atop the MIAA standings with Northwest Missouri State, which Central hosts in the final weekend of the regular season next month.

"I don't think we played very well in either game today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We got fortunate toward the end of that first game and were able to come back and get the win, which was big for us. But we didn't come out in the second game like we wanted to get the sweep and we need to correct that moving forward. We have to playing like we want to win every game at this point in the season."

Central Oklahoma didn't score a run in the first seven innings of either game Sunday. The Bronchos managed four in the eighth inning of the first game, then added a game-winner in the bottom of the ninth.

Paul Kropf and Kyle Miskovsky hit back-to-back one-out doubles in the bottom of the eighth to put UCO on the board, trailing 2-1. Anthony Alvarez tied the game when he scored Miskovsky with a pinch-hit single. Then after a Dayne Sommer walk, Xavier Freeman scored Caleb Peters, he pinch-ran for Alvarez, to give UCO a 3-2 lead. Sommer added a fourth run, scoring on a wild pitch before Missouri Western got out of the inning.

But MWSU responded, scoring two more in the top of the ninth to tie the game up.

In the ninth, Jake Dyer led off with a single and Miskovsky reached on a fielder's choice bunt on the next play. Paul Kropf then hit a deep fly ball to right to allow Dyer to tag and get to third base. After Miskovsky stole second, Missouri Western intentionally walked Glenn Reeves to load the bases.

Missouri Western then changed pitchers and before Chase Wiger ever threw a pitch, he attempted to pick Reeves off of first. He faked a throw to third before hurling the ball over to first. There, it skipped past the Western first baseman, allowing Dyer to trot home for the game-winning run.

Josh Rutland got the win in Game 1, though he allowed two earned runs in his one inning of relief effort. He took over for Ryan Lemoine, who was solid in a start. He threw eight innings of work, allowing just four hits, two runs and three walks. He struck out seven in the start.

Game 2 bore an unfavorable resemblance for the Broncho offense.

UCO scattered four hits off Western starter Jacob Miller but couldn't move any runners around on the base path. The Bronchos finished the game with 10 runners left on base.

Central tried to get a late rally going again, getting its lone run in the ninth when Justin Brown scored Taylor Avila on an RBI single. But two strikeouts followed and the Bronchos left the tying run at the plate.

Austin Lambright took the loss in Game 2, throwing just three innings. He allowed five hits, four runs and struck out four in the effort. Gaylon Viney, Landon Bond, and Junior Obeso kept Missouri Western off the scoreboard and only allowed one hit combined through the final six innings.

Dyer and Smith each had three hits between the two games to lead the Bronchos.

Central hosts Northeastern State for a mid-week conference rivalry game Wednesday before having next weekend off. UCO will host Northwest Missouri State the first weekend in May to close out the 2018 regular season.
