No. 18 Bronchos Fall To NSU

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball dropped a 7-4 decision to Northeastern State Wednesday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field in the series finale of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rivalry.

The 18th-ranked Bronchos fell to 31-16 on the season with the loss and moved to 23-10 in MIAA competition. Northeastern State is 25-19 on the year and 16-14 in league play.

"We just didn't play like we wanted to win today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "And that's unfortunate. It's not the time to play like that. We've got three games left in the season and we have an opportunity to win a conference championship if we play up to our potential, but we didn't do that today."

Central Oklahoma started the game Wednesday playing like a first-place ball club. Tyler Culver got the start for the Bronchos and struck out two in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half, UCO wasted no time getting the offense going.

Jake Dyer led off with a double down the left field line. He moved over to third on a Kyle Miskovsky fly-out to center field, and then scored on a wild pitch on the next at bat to make it 1-0.

After Paul Kropf drew a walk, Dayne Sommer swung at the first pitch he saw and drilled a two-run home run over the fence in right center to make it 3-0 UCO.

But the tide turned for the Broncho bats, who only managed two hits the rest of the game. UCO scored its fourth run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Culver went five innings and did leave with the chance to move to 9-0 on the season. However, Junior Obeso gave up the tying run in the top of the sixth as Northeastern chipped away at the lead one run at a time.

Ben Wusterbarth would take the loss on the afternoon after surrendering three earned runs in an inning of work. Josh Rutland allowed five hits in 1 2/3 innings pitched, as well as another NSU run to finish off the game.

Central dips into third place in the MIAA with the loss. Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri are both 21-9 on the season in league play. UCO owns a tiebreaker with Central Missouri if it can get back to that point. The Bronchos host Northwest Missouri for three games next weekend in the final weekend of the regular season.
