Central Tops Missouri Western

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team outlasted Missouri Western to a 5-2 win Friday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Wendell Simmons Field, and with that, the 18th-ranked Bronchos picked up win No. 30 on the season.

Central is 30-14 overall, and 22-8 in league play. Missouri Western is 22-19 overall and 14-13 in the MIAA.

"It was good to see the team work through some trouble today to get the win," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We had a few things that didn't go our way but we kept battling and that's a good sign at this point in the season. You need to be able to do that."

UCO got a relief-effort win from Junior Obeso. The junior right came out of the bullpen with two outs in the fourth inning. He threw 2 1/3 innings, striking out three along the way. Obeso allowed only one run on one hit, a solo homer in the sixth.

The Broncho pitching staff combined to strike out 14 Missouri Western batters on the day. It's the third time this season UCO has hit that mark. The Bronchos have struck out a season-high 15 in a game twice.

J.D. Cameron got the start for Central, and he struck out five in 3 2/3 innings pitched. He allowed one run on three hits and also walked a batter. Ben Wusterbarth struck out two in one inning, Landon Bond struck out one in his 1/3 of an inning pitched, and Josh Rutland struck out three, including two in the ninth, on his way to his seventh save of the season.

Central jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning without recording a hit.

Kyle Miskovsky reached on an error by the third baseman and advanced to second on the play with one out in the inning. He moved to third on a groundout by Paul Kropf. After Trae Smith walked, and took off on a steal of second base, an errant throw by the MWSU catcher down to third base allowed Miskovsky to score the first run of the game. Smith moved to third on the second error of the inning, and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 UCO.

The Bronchos got a leadoff single by Xavier Freeman in the second. He moved to second on a walk drawn by T.J. Sparr, he moved to third on a sacrifice-fly by Bryant Klusener, and he scored on another sac-fly, this time by Justin Brown, to make it 3-0 UCO.

UCO added a fourth run in the seventh inning. Brown led off with a single and scored on a Miskovsky single after stealing second base. Dayne Sommer hit a lead-off home run over the left field fence in the eighth inning to make it 5-2.

Central and Missouri Western are set to play three games this weekend. Game 2 is Saturday at 3 p.m. and the series wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m.
