Central Edges Southwest Baptist in Series Opener

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team earned an 8-5 win Friday afternoon over Southwest Baptist in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series-opening win at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 12-7 on the season with the win and are now 6-1 in league play. Southwest Baptist is 6-12 overall and 1-6 MIAA games. The schools will play a second game Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We got some good pitching today and that was key for us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We've given up too many runs in a few games as of late and to come out today and really shut a good Southwest Baptist team down for most of this game is a good sign."

Ryan Lemoine got the start, his sixth of the season. He's now 4-1 in those starts. Friday, the senior righty threw six innings, allowing six hits and one run – a solo homer in the top of the third. Lemoine struck out four while walking just two Bearcat batters.

Austin Lambright came on in relief of Lemoine and allowed one solo shot out of the park in his two innings of work. The fireball slinger struck out three and gave up three hits.

Tabor Charles came on in the ninth with an 8-2 lead to finish the game off. He was replaced after 2/3 of an inning by Josh Rutland, who got a save after SBU scored three off Charles.

"We never want to give up those runs in the final inning," Martin said. "But that was a quality start by Lemoine, and to get Lambright on the mound for a couple of innings was big too. They did good today."

They had help too.

Jake Dyer smacked a double down the left field line to open the game and quickly extend his hit streak to 15 games. That would be Dyer's only hit on the day, but he scored later after being hit by a pitch.

Kyle Miskovsky continued his terror at the plate. The senior second baseman went 4-for-5 on the day with two doubles to push his reached-base streak to 24 games. He followed Dyer's first-inning double with a single of his own.

Xavier Freeman crossed the plate first for the Bronchos Friday. The designated hitter drew a walk to open the bottom of the second inning. So did Caleb Peters. So did Taylor Avila. Bryant Klusener then got hit by a pitch and Freeman trotted across the plate.

Dayne Sommer smacked a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-1. After Freeman singled to left field, Peters smacked a two-run shot out of the park and the Bronchos moved to a controllable 4-1 lead.

Central scored thrice in the bottom of the sixth.

Klusener walked, and Dyer got to first after being pegged in the hip. Miskovsky then moved the runners up with a slick bunt down the third base line. Paul Kropf then reached on a fielder's choice as Klusener scored and Sommer popped a single through the left side to score Dyer and make it 7-1 Bronchos.

Xavier Warren pinch-hit for Peters to lead off the bottom of the seventh and reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop. He stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw by the catcher, then scored when Avila hit a deep fly ball to center field.

Sommer joined Miskovsky with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with three RBIs and the solo homer.
