Xavier Warren Powers Bronchos Past SBU

EDMOND – Xavier Warren smacked a three-RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday afternoon, his second hit of the inning, to send the University of Central Oklahoma to a 17-7 run-rule win over Southwest Baptist in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action at Wendell Simmons Field.

Warren finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs after plating T.J. Sparr, Anthony Alvarez, and Justin Brown. Warren had a single, a double, and a triple. He also scored a run and stole two bases.

All this after the Bronchos trailed 7-0 in the top of the second inning.

"I'm glad the guys found a way to comeback from that start," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "It wasn't looking good for us early. But we'll forget about that start and move on. We got a lot of good innings out of our bullpen and offensively, what we did today is how we need to be playing on an everyday basis."

Tyler Culver got the start for the Bronchos. The senior righty only threw the first inning after allowing six runs on five hits and issuing one walk.

Gaylon Viney came in to start the second. He did surrender a solo homer to the first batter that made it 7-0 Southwest Baptist. But Viney settled in.

He threw five innings, only allowed four hits, and not another run. Viney struck out six and only walked one batter to move to 1-0 on the season.

Central Oklahoma got the offense going in the second and never let up. The Bronchos scored in every inning after the first.

UCO plated three in the bottom of the second. Alvarez singled to right-center to score Paul Kropf, and Brown scored Sparr on a one-out groundout to the SBU third baseman.

After Warren drew a walk, and with second base open, he attempted to steal second. He purposely hesitated, initiating a brief run-down with the SBU second baseman while Alvarez darted across home plate to make it 7-3.

Dayne Sommer smacked a two-RBI single in the bottom of the third to score Jake Dyer and Kyle Miskovsky and make it 7-5.

The two would score again with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.

Dyer hit a two-out single to left, and moved to second when Miskovsky walked. Both moved up a base on a wild pitch, then both scored when the SBU catcher tried to throw Dyer out at third and sent the ball into left field. Suddenly the game was tied 7-7.

Warren doubled in Alvarez in the fifth to give UCO an 8-7 lead. Kropf then blasted a two-run moon shot over the scoreboard in left to score Sommer and five the Bronchos a 10-7 lead after six.

Ben Wusterbarth came on to pitch the seventh, and only threw seven pitches. He earned a save after the Bronchos ended the game just moments later.

Warren led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. He stole second before Dyer and Miskovsky each drew a walk. Sommer struck out for the inning's first out. Kropf then smacked a three-RBI double to left field to make it 13-7 Bronchos.

Xavier Freeman, in a pinch-hit at bat, grounded out to third, but moved Kropf over to third. After Sparr and Alvarez also drew walks to load the bases, Brown was hit by a pitch. That scored Kropf and brought Warren up to the plate with two outs. He watched a ball go by before swinging on the 1-0 pitch from Quinn Appletoft and drilling it over the right fielder's head and off the wall.

Warren and Kropf each had three hits for the day. Kropf was 3-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Sommer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Dyer and Miskvosky each scored three runs too.

The Bronchos' first four batters (Dyer-Miskovsky-Sommer-Kropf) went a combined 8-for-14 with 10 runs scored and seven RBIs.

Central Oklahoma improved to 13-7 with the win and are now an MIAA-best 7-1 on the season.

The final game of the series against Southwest Baptist is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
