UCO Heads To Kearney This Weekend

KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team hits the road this weekend for a three-game, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series against Nebraska-Kearney. The action begins Friday at 2 p.m. The schools will also play Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrap up the series Sunday at noon.

Central Oklahoma is 8-5 overall and looking to get back to its winning ways. UCO won seven consecutive games – all at home – over the past three weeks, but saw that streak snapped Wednesday. Central is 3-0 in MIAA games, sweeping a series against Washburn last weekend.

Nebraska-Kearney is 5-8 overall. The Lopers are 2-1 in league games, having beaten Southwest Baptist this past weekend.

"Nebraska-Kearney is a really good team," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We're going to have to be focused in every game and in every inning. We hit the ball really well for a little stretch there, and if we can get back to doing that, we'll be okay. We need our pitching to be on top of their game too."

UCO takes its high-powered offense to Nebraska. The Bronchos rank third in the MIAA in team batting average, hitting a combined .317 through 13 games this season. UCO ranks first in the league in home runs with 18.

The Bronchos are top-five team in the league in numerous offensive categories. Central ranks fourth in runs scored (106) and runs batted in (92), and fifth hits (143), doubles (26), and triples (three).

Kyle Miskovsky has led the charge on offense for the Bronchos. The senior second baseman is hitting .442 this season, and has a team-high 23 hits, six doubles and five stolen bases.

Miskovsky has recorded a hit in 11 of the 12 games he's played in this season. He's reached base safely in all 12 games, and has scored a run in the last seven games.

Dayne Sommer is also above 400 at the plate, hitting .429 in 10 games played. Sommer's .564 on-base percentage leads the team. He has 12 hits, four RBIs and seven runs scored this season.

On the mound, Central's even 5.00 earned run average ranks seventh in the league. That number took a hit this past Wednesday, when the Bronchos allowed a season-high 15 runs at Southwestern.

UCO settles in as a top-five team pitching too. The Bronchos rank fourth in walks issued (39), and fifth in opposing batting average (.257), hits (105), and runs (67). Central also has the fifth-most strikeouts this season in the league with 106.

Central plays three in Kearney, and will play a doubleheader on the road next week, meeting Oklahoma Baptist next Tuesday, before returning home to host Southwest Baptist next Friday.
