Bronchos Blast East Central

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team made up for a sluggish offensive start to the season with a 12-2 seven-inning run-rule of East Central Thursday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 2-4 on the season with the win. East Central is 1-4. The two former conference rivals will play a double-header Friday beginning at noon to wrap up the series.

"We got our bats going finally," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We had a little more confidence today swinging the bats and we should see that what we did today is what we're capable of. And we had good pitching today too. Tyler (Culver) threw really well and Tabor (Charles) kept it up out of the bullpen. Now we just need to make this our consistent level."

Tyler Culver picked up his first win of the season in his second start. The senior took a no decision last week in Texas. Culver Thursday threw six innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run – a solo home run in the top of the fifth. Culver also had five strikeouts.

Tabor Charles threw the final inning, allowing a solo home run himself in the top of the seventh. Charles also allowed three hits, but got out of a jam to set-up the Broncho run-rule in the seventh.

Leading 9-2 headed following the stretch, the Bronchos didn't waste any time putting together a rally to finish off the Tigers.

Dayne Sommer led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk before East Central replaced its pitcher. The new Tiger on the mound then beaned Caleb Peters, and both Peters and Sommer advanced a base after a wild pitch. Justin Brown cleared the bases with a double to make it 11-2. And Kyle Miskovsky smacked a one-out RBI single through the left side to score Brown and give the Bronchos their first home win of the season.

Sommer and Peters led the Bronchos with two hits apiece. Sommer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Peters was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Jake Dyer was just 1-for-4 on the day, but had a solo home run. That was the second of the day for the Bronchos. Xavier Freeman smashed a three-run homer to right field in the bottom of the fourth as part of a six-run inning for the Bronchos. Freeman's blast was his second of the season (UCO's second of the season too) and the first in the newly renovated Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos will play the Tigers in a doubleheader beginning at noon Friday. UCO is then off for the weekend before hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State next Tuesday and Southwestern Oklahoma State next Wednesday.
