Bronchos Sweep East Central

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma carried its momentum from a home-opening win on Thursday into a doubleheader pounding of East Central Friday at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos beat their intra-state rival 6-0 in a scheduled seven inning game before bashing ECU 12-2 in a seven-inning run-rule for the second time in the three-game series. UCO earned a win in the first game played on the newly renovated Wendell Simmons Field with a 12-2 seven-inning run-rule on Thursday.

"Yesterday we saw what we were capable of when we relax and start swinging the bats," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We continued that today. We can be a really good team when we go out there and settled down and just play baseball. It's good to get the wins today. It's always good to protect your home field."

The Bronchos improve to 4-4 on the season with the win, and are 3-0 at home.

UCO got the 6-0 win in Game 1 thanks in part to the bats, but the Bronchos were benefited by a dominating start on the hill by JJ Rogers.

The junior right-hander was brilliant Friday, striking out six in seven innings of work. He threw 87 pitches, allowed only five hits and didn't walk a single batter. Rogers never saw more than four batters in one inning.

Rogers struck out the side in the top of the first and never looked back.

Jake Dyer fed off Rogers' punishing first inning. In the bottom half, Dyer took a crack at the first pitch he saw and drilled an absolute missile near 400 feet over the center field wall – which sits 390 feet from home plate.

UCO would score one run in the first, second, and third inning, twice in the fourth, and once more in the fifth to give Rogers more than enough support.

Dyer led the way in the first game, nearly hitting for the cycle. He smacked a double to right-center in the top of the second inning, and snuck a single through the left side of the infield in the top of the fourth. He finished the day 3-for-4.

Kyle Miskovsky, Xavier Freeman, and Caleb Peters all had two hits on the day. Miskovsky's were both doubles. Freeman had a triple and a home run. T.J. Sparr joined Dyer and Freeman with shots out of the park.

In the second game, UCO showed more of the same.

Ryan McCollough got the start and was dominant. The senior transfer out of Broken Arrow, Okla., threw six innings, allowing just four hits and one run. He struck out six and also didn't walk a batter.

Josh Rutland also allowed a run in one inning of relief work, but also didn't walk any batters. The Bronchos didn't allow a single walk in 14 innings of baseball Friday, and only walked two in the series-opener on Thursday.

McCollough got plenty of run support behind 10 different batters who recorded a hit in Game 2.

D.J. Gasso led the way, going 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI. Cole Sanderson went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run. Peters went 1-for-4 in the second game, but he scored three runs on the day and also had a two-run homer.

Central Oklahoma returns to action next week, hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.
