Broncho Streak Ends At Southwestern

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team saw its seven-game win streak coming to a screeching halt Tuesday afternoon in a 15-8 loss at Southwestern Oklahoma State.

The non-conference loss drops the Bronchos to 8-5 overall on the season. UCO is 3-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association games and will continue league play at Nebraska-Kearney in a three-game series this weekend.

"We have been hitting the ball really well but we didn't today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We have been pitching really well too, but we didn't do that either. It was a bad combination that put us in a bad spot early on. We got in too big of a hole to try to dig out of."

After a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, Central's Ryan McCollough took the mound for his third start of the season in the bottom half.

He gave up singles to each of the first three Southwestern batters, then doubles to each of the next two. Before McCollough could get his first out of the day, SWOSU had a 4-0 lead. It was 6-0 after one inning, and 7-0 in the bottom of the second when McCollough's day came to an end.

Connor Sweeney came on to pitch for the Bronchos in the second, and got UCO out of the inning. He would allow one more run before exiting the game after the fourth inning. J.D. Cameron then came out of the bullpen and threw one inning, allowing four runs on four hits. UCO trailed 12-0 after five innings.

The Bronchos put five on the scoreboard in the sixth inning, and cut the lead to 12-8 in the top of the eighth inning. Landon Bond and Junior Obeso each threw a scoreless inning of work in the sixth and seventh respectively, but SWOSU added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 15-8 and put the game away for good.

Central scattered 10 hits Tuesday afternoon. Xavier Warren went 2-for-2 with two RBIs – both on a double in the eighth inning – and also scored a run. He was the only Broncho with more than one hit. Brock Ruminer was the only Broncho with more than one run scored. The sophomore went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Tuesday not only snapped a seven-game win streak for the Bronchos, it was also ended a seven-game home run streak. Kyle Miskovsky's double was the only extra-base hit for UCO.

The Bronchos have Wednesday off before traveling to Nebraska. UCO opens its three-game stand with UNK on Friday at 2 p.m.
