EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma women's volleyball team opened the home portion of its schedule Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House with a 3-0 win over Oklahoma Baptist.

The Bronchos (5-0) on the season and ranked No. 9 in Division II, built an early lead in the first set and cruised through to a 25-18 win. The second set wasn't as close. UCO faced a battling OBU team but continued to dispatch the competition and won the 25-11.

The Bronchos faced their toughest challenge in the final set. OBU refused to give up and made the Bronchos scratch and claw for each point. UCO was up to the test though and ended the match with a 25-21 win in the third set.

"It was a good regional win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We did a lot of good things tonight and it was good to play in front of the home crowd."

Miraku praised the work of outside hitter Ijeoma Njenje and middle blocker Allison Barr

Njenje led the Bronchos with nine kills on the night and boasted a stellar .412 hitting percentage. Barr had a .364 hitting percentage after putting home five kills on 11 attacks.

Senior Katy Davis had 31 assists in the match and did a tremendous job of moving the ball around.

"Katy did a great job of getting the ball to everyone, setting them up," Miraku said.

One of the players that benefited the most from Davis' work was senior Fulani Petties, who had seven kills on the night.

Freshman libero Dominique Lipari led the Bronchos with 12 digs, and sophomore Taylor Bevis added nine kills and 11 digs to her stat line.

Miraku added that the Bronchos need to do a little better in their services. UCO had 12 errors on the night, seven of those were service errors. In the third set, the Bronchos had four service errors alone.

The Bronchos hit the road again this weekend, heading to the Tarleton State Classic on Friday and Saturday. UCO plays Eastern New Mexico on Friday at 9 a.m. and Texas A&M Commerce at 5 p.m.

Saturday, the Bronchos face Texas-Permian Basin at 9 a.m. and Lubbock Christian at 5:30 p.m.
