DURANT - The University of Central Oklahoma volleyball team defeated Texas A&M International 3-1 on Saturday in the Southeastern Oklahoma State Invitational in Durant before knocking off the host school 3-0 later in the day.

The Bronchos dropped the first set against Texas A&M International 25-19. It was the first set lost for UCO in seven sets to begin the season and would be the only set lost during the opening weekend event.

"Overall, it was a good weekend," UCO head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We need to continue getting better defensively and playing disciplined."

Despite dropping a set, Miraku's team rebounded in its first match of the day Saturday.  Fulani Petties led the Bronchos with 14 kills, Taylor Bevis added 11 and Jordan Spence put home 10 and the dominant attacking play led UCO to 25-11, 25-12, 25-17 wins.

Miraku was pleased with Petties' play. He said it was good for her to come in and play well this weekend. The fifth-year coach also praised the play of senior Bonnie Vernon, who led the team with 15 digs in the second match of the day.

Another senior, Katy Davis, had 42 assists against Texas A&M International and in the Southeastern match, added 40 more. Davis has 160 assists through four matches and recorded 40 in three of the four contests.

Southeastern made the Bronchos work for every point in the final match of the weekend. The first set went to Central 27-25. The Bronchos took the second set 25-15 before finishing off the win with a 26-24 mark in the final set.

Bevis led the Bronchos attack much of the weekend. The sophomore saved her best performance for last.

Against Southeastern, Bevis had 19 kills and finished with a .375 hitting percentage.

The Bronchos will return to Edmond for their home opener. UCO hosts Oklahoma Baptist at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 in Hamilton Field House.
