EDMOND (Sept. 16) –
Sabetha Young made three big plays down the stretch to help unbeaten Central Oklahoma finish off a record-setting sweep of Missouri Southern Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos prevailed 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 in improving to 11-0 and setting a school record for best start to a season in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener for both teams.

"We weren't very consistent and made a lot of mistakes, but it's good to start the conference season off with a win," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Sabetha gave us a big boost tonight, especially in the third set, and we're going to need her to continue to play like that."

UCO appeared ready to finish off the sweep after jumping to an 8-2 lead in the third set, but MSSU rallied to tie it at 9-9 and it was a back-and-forth battle the rest of the way.

The Bronchos finally took the lead for good at 21-20 on a combined block by Young and Juliette Smith, with Young adding two kills the rest of the way as UCO finally subdued the pesky Lions.

Young finished with a match-high .412 attack percentage, collecting seven kills in 17 attacks with no miscues while also making five blocks.

Barbara Jackson had a team-high 12 kills for the Bronchos, while Allison Barr hit .364 with 10 kills and two errors in 22 attacks to go with three blocks.  Katy Davis had 39 assists and two assisted blocks in leading the UCO offense.

The Bronchos only trailed at 1-0 in the first set, ripping off five unanswered points to jump on top 5-1 and leading comfortably the rest of the way.

Young had a kill and solo block as UCO grabbed a quick 3-0 advantage in the second set and the Bronchos never relinquished the lead in taking control of the match.

Miraku's crew hits the road for two MIAA matches this weekend, going to No. 4-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Friday night and Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon.
