Bronchos Stay Unbeaten

DURANT, Okla. (Sept. 13) –
Allison Barr and Juliette Smith dominated at the net to lead undefeated Central Oklahoma to a pair of three-set sweeps  on the second day of the South Central Classic here Saturday.
 
The two middle blockers had a combined .586 attack percentage with 36 kills and just two errors in 58 attacks as the Bronchos stormed past Southeastern Oklahoma (25-17, 25-11, 25-18) and New Mexico Highlands (25-20, 25-18, 25-21).  Smith hit .581 in the two matches with 20 kills and two errors in 31 attacks, while Barr hit .593 with 16 kills and no miscues in 27 attempts.
 
UCO tied a school record for the best start to a season in improving to 10-0 and the Bronchos have dropped just one set. 

"Our offense was really good today," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We did a good job passing the ball and played pretty well overall.  We've got some momentum going and need to keep it up when we start conference play this week."

UCO makes its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association debut Tuesday, hosting Missouri Southern at 7 p.m.

The Bronchos hit .427 as a team in the SOSU win, getting a match-high 13 kills from Barbara Jackson and nine from Madison KingWhitney Gifford (17 digs) and Carissa Ophus (16) led the defense and Katy Davis had another strong outing at setter with 39 assists, seven digs and three kills.
 
The first set was close early and the Savage Storm led 11-8 before Jackson sparked a 9-1 run with four kills to give UCO a 17-12 lead.  The Bronchos went on to easily close out the set and never trailed in the second one to take command of the match.
 
It was tied 9-9 in the third set when consecutive kills by Barr, Jackson and Smith put UCO in front and the Bronchos closed out the match.

Smith led the way against NMHU with 13 kills and three blocks, with Jackson chipping in nine blocks and Barr, King and Sabetha Young five apiece.  King also had four service aces and Davis handed out 33 assists.

The Bronchos never trailed in the first set and then overcame a 12-7 deficit to take the second.  Davis had a kill to start a 5-0 run that tied the match and UCO went ahead to stay at 14-13 on a combined block by Jackson and Smith.

Central never trailed in the final set en route to ending the match.
