Bronchos To Take On SMU

The No. 6-ranked Central Oklahoma rowing team will hit the road one last time during the month of April to travel south to Dallas for a showdown with Southern Methodist.  Racing will take place Saturday morning, on on White Rock Lake.

The quick turnaround for the Bronchos comes on the heels of a successful weekend in Tennessee at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships, where Central placed Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ crews in the Grand Finals.  Despite the placing, the Bronchos dropped one spot in this week's CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll to No. 6.

SMU is also nearing the end of a string of consecutive weekends of racing, most recently taking on the Tulsa in duel racing in Catoosa, Okla.  The Mustangs finished just behind Tulsa in the V8+, 2V8+, and N4+ events.  Prior to that weekend SMU competed at the Knecht Cup regatta in New Jersey, where the Mustang's 2V8+ finished 15th overall and the N4+ won their event.

Despite the proximity, this will mark the first time the Bronchos and Mustangs have met in duel action since the OU Invitational is 2012. During that race the Mustangs got the best of Central by a margin of just under seven seconds.

"SMU has a very young but talented team full of recruited student-athletes," said head coach Andrew Derrick.  "Both teams have been comparable in speed over the last couple years without ever facing off, so I am excited to see how we can match up against them in every boat class, V8+, V4+, and N4s. I am hopeful they will all be good racing. We are also very excited for a somewhat local race and grateful to Coach Wright for the invitation."

Following this weekend's racing the Bronchos will take time off from racing during the finals period, but will continue preparing to host No. 2 Western Washington and Seattle Pacific during the Second Annual Central Sprints over the weekend of May 17-18.
