EDMOND (March 14) - Central Oklahoma tied a season-long five-game winning streak as it swept a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader from Lincoln, winning 9-1 and 12-2 Friday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.
UCO improved to 14-4 overall and 10-4 in conference play with the two wins, while the Blue Tigers fell to 1-13 and 0-10 in the conference. The two teams have changed the rest of the series schedule and are set to meet for a doubleheader starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
"Any time you can win two in conference it's a good thing," head coach Dax Leone said. "Our pitching was really good today and we played clean defense and got timely hits. We have to come out tomorrow and take care of business, but it was overall a good team win today."
The Bronchos got good starting pitching from Joe Hollowell and Ricky Reeves.
Hollowell retired the first 11 hitters he faced in the opener before giving up a home run to Lincoln's Ben Stewart. That was all the Blue Tigers could manage as Hollowell only allowed one other base runner over his six innings of work as he struck out seven.
Dilon Argo gave UCO the lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth. Phillip Wilson added a two-run double in the fifth and Josh Ingram broke the game open with a three-run double in the sixth.
Reeves also went six innings, allowing just one run on four hits in the nightcap while striking out a season-high 10 and improving his record to 4-0. Reeves retired 12 of the first 13 hitters he faced before yielding a couple of singles in the fifth.
The Bronchos pounded out 11 hits in support of Reeves as Dylan Raper went 3-for-3. Argo added a two-run triple wile Brad Lamberti and Ingram also had two hits for the Bronchos.
