EDMOND (Feb. 27) -- Central Oklahoma scored two runs in the bottom of the eight inning, but it wasn't enough after Washburn scored three in the top of the inning as the two schools split a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.
Landon Hallam gave up two runs on three hits over five innings of work as the Bronchos won the first game, 8-5 before the Ichabods came back to take the nightcap, 5-4.
Phillip Wilson homered and recorded the last four outs to earn his second save of the season in the opener. Dilon Argo came off the bench to hit a three-run home run to help provide the final cushion.
In the second game, the Bronchos fell behind 2-1 after David Gauntt hit his second home run of the day in the fourth inning. Gaunt also homered in the first game.
UCO tied the game in the sixth on a bases loaded walk to Brad Lamberti, he also had an RBI single in the second.
The Bronchos looked to walk off winners in the bottom of the seventh after Wacey Henderson executed a hit-and-run. Wes Jones, however, fielded the hit cleanly in right field and threw a strike to third base to nail Cesar Wong.
The Ichabods took advantage in the eighth as Matt Jackson homered to give WU the lead. Washburn added a couple more runs with two outs to push its lead to 5-2.
After the defense got Washburn out of a jam in the seventh, it let the Bronchos back in the game in the eighth.
UCO loaded the bases with one out before Jared Sterling brought in a run with a fielder's choice that left runners on the corners with two outs.
Ryan Stoup pinch hit and grounded into what looked to be the last out, but an errant throw brought the Bronchos a run closer. Wacey Henderson then hit a deep fly ball to right center that was snared by the centerfielder to end the game.
With the split, UCO is 7-3 on the season and 3-3 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assoociation, while Washburn is 4-2 overall and in league play.
The teams meet again Friday at 2 p.m., before finishing the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
