Bronchos Sweep Hays With Run-Rule Win In Finale

Central Oklahoma Wins 15-5 In Seven Innings Sunday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma completed a three-game MIAA sweep of Fort Hays State with a 15-5 run-rule win in Game 3 Sunday at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is now 16-15 overall on the season and 7-10 in the MIAA.

"We finally had some things go our way," UCO head baseball coach Robbie Rea said. "We played well and did what we needed to do. We were good on both offense and defense. We need to take this and turn it into momentum as we head into the final month of the season."

Central Oklahoma led 12-5 going to the bottom of the fifth and Noah Smallwood's two-run home run put the Bronchos on the brink of a walkoff run-rule victory. Colton Ayres followed with a walk and moved to second on a single by Carson Taylor.

Ayres then stole third following Taylor's single before Hays reset for the next at bat. And then with Caleb Castle at the plate, the Hays pitcher balked and Ayres trotted home for the run that made it 15-5 and ended the game.

It's the second game-ending balk this season. UCO beat Drury on a similar play in February.

Logan Taylor got the win for the Bronchos as he continued a weekend trend of UCO starters posting strong performances. He struck out five batters in five innings, giving up just two runs, one earned, on five hits.

Tristan Wittau threw 2/3 of an inning and gave up three runs on two hits. He did strike out two batters in the sixth before Chase Yarger came on in relief. Yarger gave up one hit but got the final four outs.

Smallwood led the way for the UCO offense, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs in the leadoff spot. He had a two-RBI triple and the two-run home run to go with a pair of singles. Carson  Taylor, Trevor Rowe, and Gage Gilchrist all had two hits in the game. Ayres, Drake Lee, Castle, Wyatt Yetter and Luke Stout all had one hit each.

UCO got off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning for the third time in as many games this weekend. After Smallwood struckout on three pitches to start the game – his only blemish of the day – Ayres doubled to right field. Lee followed with an RBI single to give UCO the early lead.

The Bronchos went 1-2-3 in the second inning, the only inning without a run on the day.

In the third, Gilchrist led off with a walk, moved to second on Smallwood's single, and then third when Ayres was hit by a pitch. He scored on a sac-fly by Lee to make it 2-0.

The Bronchos put up six runs in the fourth inning to blow the game open. Rowe had an RBI single to score Castle, Gilchrist followed with an RBI single to score Stout, then Rowe later scored on a wild pitch to give the Bronchos a 5-1 lead. Ayres also had a sac-fly to score Gilchrist, Lee had an RBI groundout to score Kade Sheldon, and Carson  Taylor made it 8-1 with an RBI single to score Smallwood.

The junior second baseman Smallwood was back up to bat in the fifth and belted the two-RBI triple to left, scoring Rowe and Gilchrist to give the Bronchos a 10-2 lead.

Stout's two-RBI single to left scored Carson  Taylor and Lee to make it 12-5, then the Bronchos ended it early in the seventh with more heroics from Smallwood and Ayres.

UCO goes back on the road with a Tuesday trip to Rogers State as the midweek series continues in Claremore. The Bronchos will then head to Joplin, Missouri to take on Missouri Southern Thursday – Saturday. Central returns home to face Northeastern State April 7.
