Central Wins Hays Series With 4-3 Game 2 Win

Bronchos Win Saturday In Edmond, Look For Sweep On Sunday

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma won its first MIAA series of the season thanks to a 4-3 win in Game 2 against Fort Hays State Saturday at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 15-15 on the season overall and is 6-10 in the MIAA. The Bronchos will wrap up the series Sunday at noon looking for the sweep.

The Bronchos got another solid outing from its starter, this time with Kamden Thompson's 7.1 inning performance paving the way for Central. The junior right-hander improved to 4-3 on the season with the win. He gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits and a pair of walks, and Thompson struck out two batters in the game. He got through 7 1/3 on 91 pitches.

Chase Yarger came out of the bullpen and got a pair of flyouts to get UCO out of the eighth. Tristan Wittau came out for the ninth but was pulled after hitting the leadoff. Brody Berlowitz followed and got a groundout and a line out before striking out the final batter of the game to earn his fourth save of the season.

UCO got a 1-0 lead in the first for the second day in a row. Noah Smallwood singled up the middle on the first pitch of the game and advanced to second on a passed ball. He moved to third on Colton Ayres' sacrifice bunt, then scored when Carson Taylor singled up the middle.

After Hays tied it in the second, the Bronchos re-took the lead in the third. Ayres drew a walk and moved to second on Drake Lee's fielder's choice bunt. Smallwood led off with a walk but was thrown out on Lee's attempted sac-bunt. Caleb Castle drew a walk to load the bases and with Ayres on third, Wyatt Yetter's RBI single to right field gave the Bronchos the 2-1 lead.

Hays tied it again in the fifth, then the Bronchos responded again in the sixth. Castle led off with a single and moved to second on Yetter's single. He then stole third and would score on Luke Stout's RBI groundout to first base that made it 3-2.

UCO added to the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Smallwood led off with a walk, then stole second. He moved to third on a wild pitch and would later score on another wild pitch to make it 4-2.

Hays scored its final run on a passed ball in the top of the eighth inning.

The Bronchos had eight hits in the game Saturday and Yetter's two led the way. Smallwood, Ayres, Taylor, Castle, Stout, and Trevor Rowe all had one each. Ayres and Stout had doubles.

Central Oklahoma and Fort Hays State play Game 3 Sunday at noon. The Bronchos will visit Missouri Southern in Joplin this weekend, playing the three-game MIAA series Thursday-Saturday ahead of Easter.
