UCO Takes Down Tigers In Series Opener

Bronchos Win 3-2 In Game 1 Friday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma won Game 1 of its MIAA series with Fort Hays State 3-2 Friday evening at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 14-15 overall with the win and 5-10 in the MIAA. It's the first Game 1 win in an MIAA series for the Bronchos this season.

Danny Satterlee struck out seven batters over 6 2/3 innings allowing just the two runs, both in the third inning. The junior right-hander gave up eight hits and issued two walks, as well as hitting one batter, but he forced Hays into nine runners left on base in the game.

Zack Hudspeth came out of the bullpen and got one out to get UCO through the seventh inning, then an 1-2-3 eighth. He struck out one batter. Mylan Childers earned his second save of the season pitching the ninth. He gave up one a single but then got a groundout and a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

The Bronchos got an RBI single from Caleb Castle in the first inning. Noah Smallwood led off the game with a walk and moved to second on Colton Ayres' sacrifice bunt and third on a sac-bunt from Drake Lee. After Carson Taylor drew another walk, Castle's single gave UCO a 1-0 lead.

Hays went ahead 2-1 in the third, but the Bronchos responded and did so with two outs. Lee singled after an Ayres walk. With runners on the corners, Ayres stole home to tie the game, 2-2.

UCO scored the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and again with two outs.

Elijah Alexander was hit by a pitch, Cade Mills drew a walk, and then Kade Sheldon reached on a fielding error that allowed Alexander to score and give UCO the 3-2 lead.

Lee led the Bronchos, going 3-for-3 in the game with a trio of singles after his early sac-bunt. That made up for 3 of 5 hits for UCO. Castle's RBI single and Alexander's base hit were the only other hits for the Bronchos.

UCO and Fort Hays State will play Game 2 Saturday at 2 p.m. with the series finale Sunday at noon. The Bronchos have lost three MIAA series 2-1 and now look to win their first league series of the year this weekend.
