Bronchos Roll Over UNK

Game Statistics

KEARNEY, Neb. (Oct. 4) –
Jake Gandara ran for three touchdowns, Cody Jones scored on another interception return and Central Oklahoma forced six turnovers in a 49-0 trouncing of Nebraska-Kearney here Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos bolted to a 28-0 halftime lead and then scored on their first three possessions of the third quarter before the defense finished off the shutout, UCO's first since a 37-0 victory over East Central in 2006.

It was also the largest margin of victory since a 51-0 rout of Langston in 1997 as the Bronchos improved to 4-1 on the season and in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"I think our defense played well and came up with some timely turnovers," head coach Nick Bobeck said.  "I'm proud of what they did in getting a shutout.  We've got high character kids and when they get their backs to the wall they don't give up.

"Offensively we were more physical up front and it all starts there.  The kids did a great job executing and we were able to punch the ball in down close."

UCO benefitted from the return of three offensive standouts – Gandara, quarterback Chas Stallard and wide receiver Marquez Clark -- who missed last week's loss to Northwest Missouri to injury in finishing with 421 total yards.

Gandara had TD runs of one, four and five yards in finishing with 92 yards on 15 carries while adding three catches for 60 yards.  Stallard completed 15-of-23 passes for 212 yards and ran for one score, with Clark adding a rushing TD.

The Lopers rushed for 281 of their 358 yards, but UCO had three interceptions and recovered three fumbles.  Linebackers Logan Orso (eight) and Chass Glaspie (seven) were the leading tacklers for the Bronchos.

UCO scored on three short runs and Jones' return in seizing its commanding 28-0 halftime lead.

Clark gave the Bronchos a spark right out of the gate in his return to action after missing the last two games, returning the opening kickoff 79 yards to the UNK seven-yard-line.

Stallard scored three plays later on a two-yard keeper when he rolled to the right and scampered into the end zone, with Seth Hiddink's extra point making it 7-0 less than two minutes into the game.

Gandara sparked UCO's next touchdown drive, touching the ball four times on a five-play, 72-yard scoring march.

The sophomore running back broke off a 39-yard run on a huge hole over the right side on the first play, went 32 yards on a screen pass from Stallard two plays later and capped it on a one-yard smash over the left side two snaps after that.

Hiddink's PAT upped the lead to 14-0 with 4:10 left in the opening period.

The Bronchos made it 21-0 on their opening possession of the second quarter, going 55 yards in nine plays.

Stallard keyed the drive with passes of 17 yards to Connor Pulley and 13 yards to Myles Tease to convert third downs before Gandara ended it with a five-yard scoring burst through a gaping hole up the middle.

UCO dodged a bullet on the ensuing kickoff when a penalty erased a 100-yard touchdown return by the Lopers and Jones came up with the back-backing play late in the half.

UNK had driven from its own two to the UCO 18, but on second-and-10 from there Jones picked off Bronson Marsh's pass in the flat at the 11 and was off to the races.  Nobody got close to Jones as he cruised 89 yards to paydirt for his second pick-six of the season.

Hiddink was again perfect on the PAT to make it 28-0 with 52 seconds left in the half.

UCO had no letdown in the second half, scoring the first three times it had the ball to increase its lead to 49-0 while the defense continued to keep the Lopers off the board.

Clark got in the scoring act for the Bronchos with a 16-yard run on a reverse to end a nine-play, 75-yard TD march on the opening possession of the third quarter.  Gandara had three runs for 29 yards in the drive.

A long kickoff return and personal foul penalty put the Lopers on the UCO 25, but the Bronchos ended that threat when David Busby forced a fumble that Jones recovered in the end zone.

It took just six plays for UCO to cover 80 yards, with Stallard's 45-yard pass to Tease the big play.  Gandara finished it off three plays later with his third TD of the day, this time from three yards out.

The Bronchos went 55 yards on their next possession, converting three third downs before Clay McKenzie tallied his first collegiate score with a four-yard burst that gave UCO a 49-0 cushion with 14:19 left to play.

The Bronchos forced four turnovers the rest of the way to keep the shutout intact, getting fumble recoveries from Adrian Mack and Jason Frimpong and interceptions from Riley Galyon and Omari Cole.

UCO returns home next Saturday to host Missouri Southern at 2:07 p.m. in the MIAA TV Game of the Week.
