Triple Overtime Thriller

Game Statistics

EDMOND (Oct. 11) –
A triple-overtime shootout came down to a question of which team could convert a two-point conversion and Central Oklahoma's Chas Stallard had the answer in propelling the Bronchos to a wild 43-41 victory over Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon at Wantland Stadium.

The redshirt freshman quarterback, who tied the game at 41-all with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Connor Pulley, gave the Bronchos their first OT win since 2007 when he rolled right and sprinted into the end zone for the tie-breaking two points.

Stallard's heroics were set up by a UCO defense that stopped the Lions on their two-point try, which teams are required to do by NCAA rules starting with the third overtime.  MSSU went ahead 41-35 on a short TD run, but linebackers Malcolm Howard and Michael Harris stuffed a run up the middle on the conversion attempt.

The Bronchos – who combined for eight wins over the previous four years -- improved to 5-1 on the season and in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.  MSSU, which lost to Central Missouri 34-31 in OT last Saturday, dropped to 2-4 and 2-4.

"It wasn't pretty, but the kids kept fighting and we found a way," head coach Nick Bobeck said.  "We made some mistakes on both sides of the ball that really hurt us and the team just kept battling.  It was a great win for us and shows the character of this football team."

The two teams ended regulation deadlocked at 21 and MSSU opened the first OT with Chris Barnwell's three-yard TD run.  UCO answered with a two-yard scoring burst by Jake Gandara.

Stallard put the Bronchos on top in the second extra period with a 13-yard TD strike to Pulley, but the Lions needed just two plays to score and it was tied at 35-all.

MSSU went ahead 41-35 on Shannon Saunders' two-yard run in the third OT, but UCO's defense thwarted the required two-point conversion attempt.

The Bronchos had a third-and-two on their final possession when Stallard rolled right and scrambled away from trouble before connecting with Pulley for the tying touchdown from seven yards out.

Gandara finished with 215 yards and three TDs rushing on 26 carries, tied for the 16th-best rushing game in school history.  Stallard ended up with 67 rushing yards and was 11-of-21 passing for 89 yards.

Linebacker Chass Glaspie was all over the field defensively and racked up 23 tackles, the first 20-plus tackle game for UCO since 1996.  Addison Staggs added 14 tackles, Howard 13 and Matt Pruitt 12.

MSSU led 7-0 at halftime and had outgained the Bronchos 168-89, but Gandara tied it with a 70-yard scoring dash on the first play of the third quarter.

Howard recovered a fumble on a fake punt on MSSU's first possession and Gandara ended a short drive with an eight-yard TD to give UCO a 14-7 lead that held up until the Lions tied it early in the fourth period.

The Bronchos went back in front 21-14 on Clay McKenzie's one-yard scoring smash, but MSSU used a 52-yard pass to set up a short scoring run that tied it at 21-all with 1:18 left.

UCO goes on the road next week, traveling to Warrensburg, Mo. to face Central Missouri.
