TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 3) – No. 7-ranked Washburn scored the final three points of a back-and-forth fourth set to hand Central Oklahoma a tough Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback here Friday night.

The Bronchos lost the first two sets before getting back in the match with a third-set win, but WU's late rally finished off a 25-15, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23 victory as UCO lost its second straight after a 15-0 start.

"We got off a slow start and never really recovered," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We played well at times, but made some big mistakes that hurt us and you can't afford to do that against a good team on the road."

Barbara Jackson led the Bronchos with 20 kills, while Bonnie Vernon added nine and Sabetha Young eight kills and four assisted blocks.  UCO also got seven kills from Allison Barr, six kills and five blocks from Juliette Smith, 45 assists from Katy Davis and 30 digs from Whitney Gifford.

The Bronchos trailed all the way in dropping the first set and overcame a 10-5 deficit in the second to pull even at 20-all on a Vernon kill before WU scored the next two points in taking the win.

UCO responded in the third set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead as Smith had two blocks and it was 5-1 after a Smith kill.  The Ichabods rallied to tie it at 9-9 and the Bronchos led 17-16 before a Jackson kill and solo block led to a closing 8-2 run.

Central got out in 9-5 in the fourth set before WU used a 8-1 run to move in front 13-10.  It was tied at 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 before the Bronchos went ahead 21-19 on a Young kill and Smith's spike at the net had UCO on top 23-22.

But the Ichabods tied it with a kill and then the Bronchos committed back-to-back hitting errors to give WU the last two points that ended the match.

UCO continues its road trip Saturday in Emporia, Kan., taking on Emporia State at 7 p.m.
