Rowing Team Helps At Food Bank

EDMOND (Nov. 25) – As the fall racing season has come to a close and the Central Oklahoma rowing team has largely moved indoors for winter training, the Bronchos have looked for other ways to be involved in their community. Over the weekend, more than 20 members of the team pitched in with their efforts at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, located in Oklahoma City.

The group was in charge of sorting food into large bins so that it could be organized into packages for families in the area. In a little over three hours, the team was able to put together over 9,000 meals, which equated to over 11,000 pounds of food.

"Saturday was my first time helping the Regional Food Bank and being able to do it with my team made it a memorable experience," said junior Chelsea Robinette.

With over 675,000 Oklahomans at risk of going hungry every day, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma distributes enough food on a weekly basis for more than 90,000 families and relies largely on volunteers for assistance.

"I took from the experience that I stress over rowing and school a lot, but I cannot imagine having to stress about where your next meal is coming from," said Robinette.  "It was awesome to be able to take that stress away from a family in need.  Helping the community makes you realize how blessed you are in your own life."

"Everyone thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at the Food Bank, which solely relies on the help of volunteers like us to distribute food to families in need, especially around the holidays," said junior Amy VanBuskirk.  "It was also a good way to get to know some of our newer novice teammates outside of a typical practice setting."
