EDMOND (Sept. 14) –
Goalkeeper Meagan Burke led an overworked defense that enabled No. 10-ranked Central Oklahoma to make a successful debut in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and remain unbeaten Friday afternoon at chilly Tom Thompson Field.

Kate Foran scored the lone goal in the 29th minute, Burke had five of her seven saves in the second half and UCO repeatedly staved off the Lions down the stretch to eke out a 1-0 victory in its first-ever MIAA game.

The Bronchos, now 6-0, return to action Sunday when they host undefeated Southwestern Oklahoma (5-0) at 1 p.m.

“We can't expect to just show up and not be ready to play,” UCO coach Mike Cook said.  “Missouri Southern took it to us and we're fortunate to get out of there with a win.  Everybody in this conference is going to be gunning for us and we've got a long ways to go in the focus department.”

The Lions outshot UCO 11-5, including by a 7-2 margin in the second half when the Bronchos were clinging to their 1-0 lead.

MSSU had several good scoring opportunities in the final 25 minutes, but Burke and Jordan Hutchison came up with some clutch plays down the stretch.  Burke made a spectacular stop with 24:32 remaining when she punched a shot just over the top of the goal and Hutchison managed to kick the ball away from in front of an open net off a rebound shot at the 13:30 mark.

UCO scored on its only shot on goal, that coming 28:27 into the contest when Foran took a pass from Stephanie Fleig and converted from close range.
