UCO Helps With "Big Pink" Week

The Central Oklahoma rowing team participated in “Big Pink” week recently to support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and help raise awareness for breast cancer.

“Big Pink” week was comprised of a week-long volleyball tournament with the philanthropic purpose of raising proceeds for their cause. The tournament was “Big Pink” with the addition of a four-foot tall pink ball that was used for competition.

Two teams of six Broncho rowers took place in the tournament to support the cause and the teams actually faced off in the first round of the tournament.

“It was a fun experience, and it was great way to help UCO raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” sophomore Kelsey Philhower said.

The event raised $3110.02, with those funds able to go directly to women and men affected by breast cancer in the Central Oklahoma Area.

This was the first time the UCO rowing team took part in 'Big Pink' week, though philanthropy has been something very important to the team this season.  The team also contributed to building a playground next to the future site of the CHK Central Boathouse in November as a part of a charity event.

“We have a very special group of young women here and giving back to the has been a big priority for them all year,” UCO coach Andrew Derrick said.  “ I am very proud of them both on and off the water.”

The Bronchos are currently preparing for their championship season an
d open the spring campaign March 9-11 in the OU Invitational, which will take place at the Exchange Boathouse in Oklahoma City.
