SAN ANGELO, Texas (April 2) –
Central Oklahoma used a trio of big innings to power its way to an impressive two-game sweep here Saturday on the second day of the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament, highlighted by a 9-1 romp past No. 2-ranked Angelo State.

The Bronchos scored four runs in each of the first two innings to take control early en route to the run-rule rout of the Rambelles and then broke loose for all five of their runs in the third inning of a 5-2 win over Tarleton State.

UCO, 3-1 in the weekend tournament that pits LSC North and South division teams against each other and now 18-15 on the year, finishes up Sunday against Texas A&M-Kingsville and Abilene Christian.

“ We came out ready to play today and stayed aggressive all day,” UCO coach Genny Stidham said. “That's a big win for us to come in here and beat a team like Angelo State and I liked the way we came right back against Tarleton and didn't have a letdown.”

The Bronchos seized command quickly against ASU, getting lead-off back-to-back singles from Kayce Raines and Megan Bentley in the bottom of the first before Kacie Edwards followed with a three-run home run. Brittany Geter added an RBI double to push the lead to 4-0.

Three hits and a pair of errors helped UCO extend that to 8-0 in the second, with Megan Whitmire and Geter getting run-scoring singles in that frame as the Bronchos scored all four runs with two outs.

ASU scored its lone run in the third, but the Bronchos got that back in the fourth on Brittany Weaver's RBI double and the game ended after five innings on the eight-run rule.

Rachael Steverson shut down the high-powered Rambelles, giving up just two hits and the one run while striking out five. Whitmire went 3-for-3 to lead UCO's 10-hit attack, while Bentley and Geter had two hits apiece.

The Bronchos broke open a scoreless tie with Tarleton in the third inning, pushing across all five of their runs on four hits and two errors. Bentley and Whitmire had RBI singles, Edwards a run-scoring fielder's choice and Brooke Walters an RBI walk in that frame.

Tarleton got one run in the fourth and fifth to make it 5-2 and put runners on first and third with one out in the seventh before Steverson came on to get the final two outs and preserve the win.

Amanda McClelland picked up the pitching win, giving up five hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings while Steverson earned her second save.

Raines and Whitmire had two hits apiece for the Bronchos.
