EDMOND (Nov. 13) --
Giant-killer Dallas Baptist pulled off its second straight upset and ended Central Oklahoma's record run Sunday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field in the second round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship.

The No. 14-ranked Bronchos had won a school-record 15 games in a row – including a 4-1 victory over DBU on Sept. 29 -- but the Patriots prevailed 1-0 in a defensive struggle to advance to next week's South Central Regional finals against Abilene Christian.

DBU, which ended No. 4-rated Central Missouri's 17-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory Friday, improved to 16-5-1.  UCO ended the season 15-4.

“It's a tough loss to take and we're all terribly disappointed,” said head coach Mike Cook, whose team was making its eighth national tournament appearance since 2000.  “We didn't get much going offensively, but I thought we played hard and battled all the way.

“I'm really proud of what we accomplished this year and how this team responded after we lost our first three games of the season.  They showed a lot of character in winning 15 straight games to make it back to the national tournament and we had a great year.”

UCO was playing its first game since ending the regular season on Oct. 30 and had trouble getting its offensive untracked, thanks in large part to 10 offside calls that went against the Bronchos.

The game was a defensive battle throughout, with the Patriots getting the lone score in the 56th minute when Lea Sedwick headed in her 13th goal of the season off a corner kick by Brittany Layne.

UCO had several good scoring chances down the stretch, but Summer Grantham's hard shot from 10 yards out with 30:30 left to play was stopped on a great save by DBU goalkeeper Kerry Edwards and Dominique Dinka's long-range attempt was barely stopped five minutes later.

Sarah Purcell almost curled in a 20-yard shot from the right side of the goal at the 21:56 mark and Grantham's try from the middle of the field with 4:24 remaining was too high as the Patriots kept the Bronchos at bay.

It was the final game for five UCO seniors – Samantha Rusk, McKenzie Caldwell, Katy Kashwer, Lizzie Merritt and Ashton Morris.
