Philhower Has Different Fall Break

While most Central Oklahoma students spent their fall break the weekend of Oct. 20-23 with family and relaxing after midterms, rowing team co-captain Kristin Philhower enhanced her career by attending the annual NCAA Regional Career in Sports Forum (RCSF) in Dallas, Texas.

The RCSF is an experience where student-athletes learn and acquire skills to help transition them into a career in sports.  Student-Athletes must be nominated by their institution to be eligible to attend and this year the key areas of focus were the overall structure of the NCAA, branding oneself, networking, business etiquette and taking the next step into the sports business world.

“It was a great opportunity to meet professionals in the field, NCAA interns, graduate assistants and the leadership development department from the NCAA,” Philhower said.  “The forum gave me great insight about what steps to take to get to the next level in coaching and administration.  I also felt very prepared for the NCAA's curriculum thanks to the classes and professors at UCO.”

Philhower is a senior kinesiology major at UCO and been involved with rowing outside of UCO for four years as a major contributor to the Oklahoma City Boathouse district.  She hopes to pursue collegiate coaching after graduation.

A fourth-year member of the Broncho rowing team, Philhower recently competed in the Varsity 8 at the Head of the Oklahoma on Oct. 4 that qualified for the prestigious night sprints for the first time.  Philhower competed in the Varsity 8 last spring that received UCO's first national ranking.

“We are all very proud of Kristin, both on and off the water,” head coach Andrew Derrick said.  “She is a great representative of both our team and our university and I'm grateful she got the opportunity to be exposed to this level of professionalism while still pursuing her undergrad degree.”
