EDMOND (Sept. 12) –
Shayna Kindsvater spearheaded a defensive effort that kept Oklahoma City at bay down the stretch and Central Oklahoma held on for a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field on the final day of the weather-plagued Dr. Pepper Classic.

The two teams played to a 1-1 first-half stalemate during a constant downpour before lightning forced a 45-minute delay, with UCO breaking the tie in the 68th minute.  Kindsvater made several fine plays from her sweeper post in the final 20 minutes and goalkeeper Samantha Rusk had a big save with just over four minutes remaining to keep the Bronchos in front of the NAIA No. 18-ranked Stars.

St. Edward's blanked Midwestern State 2-0 in Sunday's first game, which started an hour late  and was delayed for nearly 45 minutes midway through the second half
because of lightning.

UCO evened its record at 2-2 with the win.  The Bronchos continue their season-opening six-game homestand next weekend, hosting St. Mary's and Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

“It was a sloppy game with lots of delays and stoppages,” UCO coach Mike Cook said. “ We're extremely beat up.  We're just piecing people together here and there and we're really happy with the win.”

The Bronchos took a 1-0 lead just 13:18 into the game when freshman Sherri Collins took a Summer Grantham cross and easily beat the goalkeeper to the net for her first career goal.

OCU tied it in the 28th minute on a penalty kick and it stayed 1-1 until the 68:13 mark, with Grantham the catalyst again.   This time she found Katy Kashwer with a perfect pass through the middle of the defense and Kashwer knocked in a shot to the left side of the goal from 15 feet away for the game-winner.

UCO also got good defensive play from Dominique Dinka and Stephanie Fleig, while Rusk finished with three saves as she went the distance in goal for the fourth straight game.
