UCO Loses Championship Heartbreaker In Wichita

Bronchos Fall 2-1 To Missouri Western In 100th Minute

WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma suffered an agonizing overtime loss in the 2025 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship final Saturday afternoon falling 2-1 to Missouri Western.

With an automatic bid to the national tournament on the line, the Bronchos erased an early deficit to tie the match, 1-1, and fought through 90 minutes and were nearly done with the first 10-minute overtime when an incredible volley ended the game.

Missouri Western served a cross into the center of the box and Ava Martin took it out of the air and put it past senior goalkeeper Avery Bass for the game- and championship-winning strike.

"I'm absolutely gutted for this team," UCO head women's coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We played really well and I hate to see it end like that. Credit to Missouri Western, that was a great goal. But, just hate for the team."

Central Oklahoma was ranked No. 10 in the NCAA's Central Region rankings released earlier this week. The top eight make the national tournament. The official bracket will be released during a selection show on Monday.

Central Oklahoma was outshot 13-11 by MWSU, including a narrow 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. MoWest held a 12-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Missouri Western jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a sixth-minute score, but UCO answered fairly quickly.

In the 19th minute, Caleah Carter's shot was saved off the end line and the Bronchos earned one of their three corners on the day. Jane Lockhart lined it up and sent the ball in, the MWSU goalkeeper lept into the air and got a hand on it, but not enough to stop it from going into the goal for the score.

Lockhart tied the game 1-1 and it stayed that way for the next 80 minutes.

With just 50 seconds remaining in the first overtime, MWSU sent in the cross and the volley strike ended the match and Central's championship hopes.

UCO is 10-6-5 following Saturday's loss.
