OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 17) -- Kenny Meredith scored a first-period fall and Central Oklahoma won nine of 10 matches to roll past Oklahoma City 31-3 Tueday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Meredith needed just 2:11 to dispose of Marvin Lewis in their 184-pound bout to register the only pin of the evening, with the NCAA Division II sixth-ranked Bronchos also getting a major decision from 197 Jarrett Edison and seven regular decisions in routing the NAIA No. 14-rated Stars.
"I'm glad we got the win and there were some positive points, but we've got to wrestle better than that," UCO coach David James said. "We were sloppy in a lot of spots and were hanging on instead of trying to make things happen. Kenny came out and did when he needed to do and we had a couple of other guys wrestle pretty well, but we've got a lot of work ahead."
The Bronchos held a 22-3 takedown advantage in the rout and earned a riding time point in all eight of their wins that went the distance.
Meredith had three takedowns in the opening minute before finally pinning Lewis, while Edison had three takedowns and two near-falls in a 13-4 romp over Jake Mabry.
Dustin Finn, ranked No. 1 in Division II, picked up a solid 8-3 win over NAIA's No. 2 Corey Johnson on the strength of three takedowns as he continued his strong early-season showing and 125 Casy Rowell cruised to a 7-1 win over Kidd Gomez in a battle of freshmen three-time Oklahoma high school champions.
The Bronchos also got wins from 133 Trison Graham, 141 Scott Berens, 149 Austin Standage, 165 Derrick Adkins and 174 Cody Rowell.
UCO returns to action this weekend, going to Omaha, Neb. for the Nebraska-Omaha Open.
