UCO Edges Patriots

DALLAS (Aug. 30) – Central Oklahoma used a pair of goals just four minutes apart to take control late in the first half and went on to a 2-1 win over Dallas Baptist here Saturday night.

The No. 10-ranked Bronchos scored in the 31st minute and the 35th minute in taking a 2-0 advantage. The Patriots made it 2-1 just seconds later, but UCO's defense kept DBU in check the rest of the way.

“We played really good defense, especially in the second half,” UCO coach Mike Cook said. “We continue to struggle some on offense, but we really controlled the field and continue to make a lot of progress.”

The Bronchos, now 2-0 on the young season, return to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game at Newman in Wichita, Kan. Before hosting the UCO Classic next weekend.

Freshman Katy Kashwer scored the go-ahead goal for the Bronchos, taking a cross from Lizzie Merritt and getting her first collegiate score at the 30:16 mark.

Senior Stephanie Lovely, who scored both goals in UCO's season-opening 2-0 win over Oklahoma Christian on Thursday, made it 2-0 at 34:06 when she knocked in a deflection off the goalkeeper.

The Patriots stunned the Bronchos with a goal just 22 seconds after Lovely's score, but DBU managed just one shot in the entire second half against UCO's dominating defensive unit.

Freshman Samantha Rusk went the distance in goal to pick up the win, making four saves.
