Central Oklahoma Shoots 294 In Second Round, Inches Up Leaderboard

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Central Oklahoma finished the second round of the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional Championships in nearly 10 less shots and the Bronchos inched up the leaderboard to 12th place on Friday.

UCO posted a 6-over-par 294 after the second trip around Katke Golf Club. The Bronchos were 15th after a 303 in Thursday's first round.

Nick Canales is leading the charge in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. The junior shot a 4-under-par 68 on Friday to surge up the leaderboard. He's 2-under through 36 holes.

Canales eagled the Par 5 No. 3 and the Par 5 No. 9 on Friday. He added a birdie on No. 7 and four par putts to counter a pair of early bogeys. On the back nine, Canales birdied No. 12 & 18 and sank six more par putts to counter one bogey in finishing the day 4-under par.

Rhett Hughes recorded a 1-over 73 on Friday. The sophomore was 7-over after the first round but bounced back in the second. He had two birdies on the front nine and then had eight pars and a birdie on the back nine.

Ty Hyatt was subbed into the lineup prior to Friday's second round. While he cannot compete for the individual title after sitting out Thursday, his 4-over 76 did help the Bronchos in the team standings. Hyatt shot a 40-36 with three birdies and 10 pars on the day. Karsten Paciotti shot a 9-over 81 on Thursday and was subbed out for Hyatt. Coaches can make substitutions up to 30 minutes prior to the start of a round.

Bryant Polhill and Baylor Bostick both shot a 5-over 77 on Friday. Polhill had 12 par putts and one birdie while Bostick had six pars and four birdies. Polhill is 7-over after 36 holes and Bostick is 9-over par.

Central Oklahoma needs to make a big move on Saturday with hopes of qualifying for the national tournament next week in Las Vegas. The top four teams on the leaderboard after 54 holes advance. The top two individuals not on an advancing team will also qualify for the national championship.
