Bronchos Ready For MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

UCO Competing In Eight Events Over Three Days In Pittsburg

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Central Oklahoma is set for the three-day MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at Pittsburg State's newly opened Russ Jewett Outdoor Track & Field Complex with competition running Friday afternoon through Sunday evening.
 
UCO will begin Friday evening with three preliminary competitions. The 400-meter, 100-meter, and 400-meter hurdles will run at 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m., and 7:40 p.m. respectively. Maya Conrad and McKenna Huston are competing in the 400m for the Bronchos. Mikayla Stephenson is Central's lone entry in the 100m, and Tyana Hymes the lone competitor in the 400m hurdles.
 
On Saturday, two more preliminaries and one final event will be contested. Gabija Pukstas and Huston will run in the 800m while Hymes comes back for the 100m hurdles. The 3,000-meter Steeplechase finals featuring Maya Winterburn and Kylee Smith is scheduled for Saturday night.
 
The action concludes with Championship Sunday and Central Oklahoma will have at least three events with the 1,500m, the 5,000m, and the 4x400m relay. Pukstas is running in the 1,500m and the 5,000m, while Conrad, Asia Williams, Ariane Williams, and Smith join her in the 5,000m.
 
Finals will also be contested in the 100m hurdles, 400m, 100m, 800m, and 400m hurdles if Central qualifies.
 
Conrad and Huston will run in the 400m to get the weekend started for Central Oklahoma. The sophomore Huston has the team best (57.28 seconds) this season. The freshman Conrad's season best is 1:00.20 earlier this month at OU.
 
Stephenson is set to run in the 100-meter dash Friday evening. Her career-best is 12.60 seconds her freshman season. Her season-best this year is 12.91 seconds at OU earlier this month.
 
Hymes is set to take on both the 100m and 400m hurdles this weekend. The sophomore has career-bests 14.95 in the 100 and 1:04.79 in the 400 this season.
 
Pukstas takes on the 800m on Saturday along with Huston. The freshman Pukstas has three wins this season including one in the 800m two weeks ago at North Texas. Her best time is 2:16.27 this season which earned her a third-place finish at OU three weeks ago. She'll return Sunday to run in the 1,500m, which she has two wins in this season. Her best time is 4:41.13, also set two weeks ago at UNT. Huston has only competed in the 800m once this season but finished second at West Texas in March with a time of 2:22.56.
 
Winterburn and Smith began competing in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase this season. Winterburn, a freshman, has the top three times in her three career competitions. Her best is 12:55.27 at UNT. Smith has the next three best times and the senior's top time is 13:38.44 at OU.
 
The 5,000-meter finals Sunday evening will feature the most Bronchos in one event this weekend. Ariane  Williams leads the team into it with a season-best 19:23.97 at UNT. She is the only one of the five distance runners that has competed in the event this spring.
