UCO Freshman Wins Twice In Texas

Central Oklahoma Freshman Gabija Pukstas Wins 800m, 1500m, At North Texas Meet

DENTON, Texas – Gabija Pukstas won two races at North Texas' Bill Schmidt Invitational this weekend to lead the Bronchos in the final tuneup before conference.

The freshman from Stillwater won the 1,500 meters on Friday and just missed the school record by three seconds with her time of 4:41.13. She came back Saturday and won the 800m in 2:20.08.

Pukstas led the way for the Bronchos, who recorded 12 top 10 finishes this weekend in Texas. UCO now heads to the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 1-3 in Pittsburg, Kansas.

McKenna Huston (58.86) finished sixth in the 400m and Maya Conrad (1:00.25) took eighth in the event. Asia Williams finished 10th (2:41.70) in the 800m.

Pukstas and Williams were both in the top 10 in the 1,500m as well with Williams coming in seventh (5:11.94). Ariane Williams finished sixth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:23.97.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Tyana Hymes took sixth place with a time of 1:05.19. Maya Winterburn (12:55.27) and Kylee Smith (13:40.49) finished second and third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Abigail Kelly recorded a pair of top-five finishes with a fifth-place showing in the shot put (11.36m) and a fourth-place finish in the discus (35.98m).
