UCO Routs Mules To Claim Sixth Straight MIAA Title

Top-ranked Bronchos Clobbered No. 14 Central Missouri 37-7 Behind Six Bonus Wins

EDMOND – Two early routs set the tone and top-ranked Central Oklahoma rolled on to a stunning 37-7 annihilation of No. 14 Central Missouri Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos opened with a major decision by 125 Eli Kirk and a technical fall by 133 Jason Henschel in grabbing quick control, then added four more bonus wins in overwhelming the Mules to capture their sixth straight MIAA championship.

UCO ended the dual season 16-1 with its 15th consecutive win while also stretching its school-record home winning streak to 33 in a row. It was also the 31st straight league win for the Bronchos, who are now a perfect 48-0 against UCM.

Hunter Jump (174) and Garrett Wells (197) both had falls while 157 Gabe Johnson and 184 Branson Britten added technical falls. UCO also got wins from 141 Josh Taylor and Hvy Ryan Nichols to complete its dominating day.

"I'm just proud of all guys and not just the starters," head coach Todd Steidley said. "It takes a team to win any kind of title. Our coaching staff did an excellent job. The assistants had the guys dialed in and we wrestled well.

"It was awesome to see all the support that showed up today for our seniors and all the former wrestlers who came out. It was a great day for Broncho wrestling."

It was a great day indeed and Kirk got UCO off to a fast start.

The 13th-ranked sophomore scored two takedowns and a three-point near-fall in opening up a 9-1 lead after one period before adding two more takedowns in a cruising to a 17-4 romp.

Henschel followed suit with another dominating performance. The top-ranked senior led just 3-0 after the first period before pouring it on with a takedown and near-fall in the second and two more near-falls in the third for an 18-0 shutout.

The eighth-ranked Taylor used takedowns in the second and third periods to break away from a scoreless tie for an 8-1 victory over No. 10 James Wright before the Mules got on the scoreboard with a win at 149.

Johnson followed with another command performance as the top-ranked senior star demolished Ayden Dolt 18-3. Johnson had four takedowns and a near-fall while adding a riding time point to secure the technical fall for his 28th straight win.

The Mules got their last win at 165 before UCO finished off the dual with a four-match winning streak.

Jump started that with a third-period fall in securing his 12th consecutive victory. The fourth-ranked senior used a takedown and two near-falls in the second period to break a scoreless tie with Anthony Erickson, then took Erickson down again in the third before turning him for his fifth pin of the season at the 5:58 mark.

Britten had no trouble with Ayden Flores, going up 7-0 after the first period with a takedown and near-fall. The third-ranked senior escaped quickly in the second, then struck for another takedown and near-fall to make it 15-0 and end it.

The third-ranked Wells didn't waste much time in securing his second fall of the season, scoring two quick takedowns before decking Trey Brewer just 2:20 into the opening period.

Nichols capped off the romp with the lone upset of the day, downing 14th-ranked Torin Forsyth 4-2. Nichols broke a 1-1 tie on a takedown with 1:00 left in the match before Forsyth escaped at 0:30, but Nichols easily held on down the stretch for the big win.

The Bronchos will be back home in two weeks to host the NCAA Division II Super Regional IV Tournament on Sunday, March 1. The top-three finishers at each weight in that 11-team event advance to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, set for March 13-14 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

UCO honored its 1985-86 national championship team at halftime of the dual with all six All-Americans – 142 Joe Starzenski (champion), 126 Billy Reid (runner-up), 150 Stoney Wright (runner-up), 142 Kevin Freeman (third), 167 Howard Seay (fifth) and 158 Jack O'Connor (sixth) – along with head coach David James in attendance to be recognized.
