Bronchos Coast Past New Mexico Highlands

Gabe Johnson Ties School Record With One of UCO's Four Technical Falls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- Gabe Johnson tied a school career record with one of Central Oklahoma's four technical falls as the top-ranked Bronchos hammered New Mexico Highlands 38-3 Saturday night.

Johnson's 17-2 rout at 157 pounds was the 25th technical fall of his illustrious career, tying the all-time mark set by Kyle Evans from 2005-08. UCO also got easy 15-0 shutouts from 133 Jason Henschel, 184 Branson Britten and 197 Garrett Wells in improving to 11-1 with its 10th straight win.

Hunter Jump picked up a forfeit at 174, while 125 Guy Clevenger, 141 Josh Taylor, 149 Kasen Miller and Hvy Ryan Nichols all earned decisions. The Bronchos continue their long road trip Sunday with a 3 p.m. (Oklahoma time) dual at Colorado State-Pueblo.

"We looked pretty good at some weights and struggled to get much going offensively at a few others," head coach Todd Steidley said. "I thought our veteran guys really came out ready to go and took care of business."

Johnson was the only one to give up points in the four technical falls UCO recorded and that came when the senior standout let Reed McCarty loose in order to get another takedown. The two-time defending national champion had four takedowns and a near-fall in the lopsided win, his 24th straight.

Henschel improved to 12-0 with another dominating performance. The top-ranked senior scored a takedown 40 seconds into the match, then quickly added a trio of four-point near-falls to end it at the 2:42 mark.

Britten used a takedown and near-fall to build a 7-0 lead after the first period, added an escape, takedown and penalty point in the second to make it 12-0 and ended it on another takedown 14 seconds into the final stanza.

Wells also led 7-0 after the opening period, escaped quickly to open the second and scored two more takedowns around another escape after an injury timeout to finish off the 15-0 whitewashing in 4:26.

Clevenger prevailed 4-1 when he came out on top after a scramble with Diego Camarillo for the winning takedown 30 seconds into the two-minute sudden-victory period, while Taylor used an escape and riding time point to post a 2-0 shutout.

Miller used a second-period takedown and third-period reverse to claim a 6-1 victory in his first dual appearance for the Bronchos. Nichols ended the dual with a 6-2 win behind a takedown in the first period and reverse in the second.

NMHU's lone win came at 165 where No. 8 Ivan Smith trimmed 10th-ranked Bryce Dauphin 5-2 on a takedown midway through the sudden-victory period.
