Central Records Five Top 10s In Norman

Sprinters Lead The Way At OU's Indoor Meet

NORMAN, Okla. – Zakeirah Johnson finished eighth in the 60-meter finals Thursday at OU to highlight a day full of Top 10 performances for the Bronchos at the JD Martin Invitational.
 
Johnson, a sophomore from Omaha, Nebraska and a McPherson transfer, qualified for the finals with 7.69-second time in the prelims. She returned for the second chance with a 7.63 to finish eighth. Four sprinters from OU, one from OSU, and another from Langston finished ahead of Central's young sprinter.
 
In the 400-meter race, another transfer, McKenna Huston, Wichita State, finished sixth with a time of 1:00.40. UCO veteran Deriayah Lee was close behind with a time of 1:01.24 for an eight place finish.
 
Lee came back in the 60-meter hurdles for another Top 10, taking third place with a 9.11-second race. Sophomore Tyana Hymes finished seventh in 9.42 seconds to give UCO five Top 10 performances on the day.

In the 200m, Central had eight competitors and Huston led the way. She finished 15th with a time of 26.97 seconds. Reta Ojene (27.53), Hymes (27.55), Lauryn Thaggard (27.93), Jaelynne Knighton (27.93), Maya Conrad (28.30), Marley Battles (28.74), and Mikayla Stephenson (29.00) all compete in the event.
 
Ojene, Conrad, and Amiya Hill joined Huston and Lee in the 400m. Ojene finished 14th (1:02.65), Conrad 15th (1:02.66), and Hill 16th (1:02.95).
 
Thaggard (8.40), Stephenson (8.41), Knighton (8.53), and Battles (8.57) all joined Johnson in the 60m.
 
UCO had two field athletes competing Thursday in Norman. Charis Phillips finished 17th in the long jump with a mark of 5.19 meters (17 feet, 1/2 inch). She did not register an official mark in the triple jump. Abigail Kelly competed in the shot put and finished 11th with a mark of 11.13 meters (36 feet, 6 1/4 inches).
 
Central Oklahoma competed Thursday for the second time in six days. The Bronchos will return to action next Friday for their third event in three weeks at the Pittsburg State Invitational.
