Komada.& Koga Are Regional Champions

UCO Duo Wins ITA Central Region Title, Advances To ITA Cup

EDMOND – Pete Komada and Ayaka Koga are regional champions following the duo's run the ITA Central Region Championships at Edmond Center Court this weekend, earning UCO a spot in next month's ITA Cup.
 
"So proud of them," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "This was no easy task and the had a lot of good matches. To do this plus play singles too for three days, that's a big deal. We are really proud of them and looking forward to the ITA Cup next month."
 
Komada and Koga went 5-0 this weekend, winning in the Round of 32 on Friday night, taking two matches on Saturday to reach the semifinals, and two more on Sunday evening to earn the title, Central Region champions. The ITA Cup is scheduled for Oct. 16-19 in Rome, Ga.
 
Komada may also be headed there for singles play. The senior All-American went 5-0 to reach the championship match before her first loss. Eight regional champions earn automatic berths, while eight more will be chosen with an at-large bid.
 
The 2025 regional title for Komada and Koga is familiar territory for Central Oklahoma tennis, with five doubles titles in the last seven years. Komada won it two years ago with Blythe Buntrock, who won it the year before with Nikki Boyar. Mae Canete and Christine Canete won it 2021. Boyar and Paola Landin won it in 2019.
 
This weekend, Komada and Koga went 5-0 with stellar play all three days. On Friday night, they beat Emily Thinnsen and Chloe Siegfort of Sioux Falls, 8-2. It was tougher Saturday afternoon, but the duo prevailed with a 9-7 win over Arkansas Tech's Monica Balau and Elis Gergel. Later Saturday night, they won another 8-2 decision over Southeastern Oklahoma State's Emilia O'Neill and Amishi Shukla.
 
Sunday afternoon, Komada and Koga won 8-4 over Jasel Bailey and Peyton Koper from Washburn to advance to the championship match. Sunday night, in a two-set victory, Komada and Koga won 6-1, 6-1 over Harding's Karli Roux and Brooke Coffman to claim the title.
 
Komada went on an MIAA tour through the singles tournament. She won twice in singles play on Friday against Victoria Debono of Emporia, 6-2, 6-0, and Washburn's Bailey, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the Round of 16. On Saturday, Komada knocked out Jevrosima Mitic of Missouri Western, 6-3, 6-4, and Miru Nonaka of Northwest Missouri, 6-1, 6-2.
 
In Sunday's semifinal, she beat Missouri Western's Johanna Priedite in a three-set battle, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, to reach the championship match. There she fell to Washburn's Renske Ubachs, 6-1, 6-1.
 
Following the completion of the eight ITA regional tournaments, the association will announce at-large bids for the ITA Cup and Komada will learn if she is going to play for one or two national titles in Georgia next month.
