Bronchos Open ITAs With 13 Wins

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma opened the 2025 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Region Championships Friday with 13 wins in a long day of action at Edmond Center Court.
 
Pete Komada and Anika Ouwejan went 2-0 to advance to the Round of 16 in Singles play. Komada with Ayaka Koga, and Karyna Yurchenko and Hui Soo advanced to the Round of 16 in Doubles play after both duos won their opening round matches Friday.
 
"It was a long day, but we fought hard and got some good results," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "This tournament is a grind and we're really just getting started. We need to have another good day tomorrow and try to keep it going."
 
Komada went 2-0 and both wins came over MIAA opponents. She beat Victoria Debono of Emporia State, 6-2, 6-0 in the Round of 64 and followed that with a win over Jasel Bailey of Washburn, 6-4, 6-1, in the Round of 16. Ouwejan defeated Arkansas-Fort Smith's Rayssa Dominguez, 6-3, 6-3 and then Henderson State's Emila Nowak, 6-3, 7-5.
 
In Doubles play, Yurchenko and Soo defeated Ouachita Baptist's Natalia Zamora and Alice Kubler, Ouachita, 8-1, while Komada and Koga defeated Sioux Falls' Emily Thinnsen and Chloe Siegfort, 8-2.
 
The Bronchos went 13-8 on the day. Koga, Soo, and Yurchenko all won their Round of 64 matches in Singles play before falling in the second round. Dilay Ata lost her first match. Ouwejan, with teammate Haley Hibbets, lost their first doubles match of the tournament.
 
In B Flight play, Milana Quick went 2-0 with wins over Missouri Western's Mila Larrieu (6-4, 6-3) and Sioux Falls' Emily Thinnsen (6-4, 6-3). Hibbets won her first match before falling in the second round. Brylee Toney and Marina Becaro dropped their ITA openers.
