Bronchos Edge Augustana In Super Regional Opener

Terin Ritz Throws Two-hit Shutout, Drives In Only Run in 1-0 Victory

EDMOND – A pair of All-Americans squared off in a true pitcher's duel Thursday evening at jam-packed Gerry Pinkston Stadium and a single run was all Central Oklahoma needed in the first game of the NCAA Division II Central Super Regional.

Terin Ritz threw a complete-game two-hitter while also driving in Rylee Anglen for the game's only score in the bottom of the first inning to lift the No. 4-ranked Bronchos past No. 6 Augustana and ace Grace Glanzer.

UCO improved to 50-8 in snapping the Vikings' 24-game winning streak and is one win away from advancing to the Division II Championship Finals. The teams meet again at 2 p.m. Friday, with Augie needing a win to force the "if necessary" game at 4:30.

"Every pitch we valued, which mattered today in a 1-0 ballgame," head coach Cody White said. "We competed every single play.

"We're going to celebrate this win for the rest of the day and then we're going to come back with a mission mindset tomorrow. We have to stay on that mission and keep workings towards it and not get ahead of ourselves."

Ritz outdueled Glanzer in a showdown between two of the most dominant pitchers in Division II while also getting another flawless performance from the UCO defense.

The Vikings never really threatened against Ritz, who walked two batters and gave up a pair of singles. The senior right-hander retired the final 12 batters she faced to polish off her 12th straight complete game and 10th shutout, improving to 22-3.

"Me and Layne (catcher Layne Smith) worked extremely well together and we have for a very long time," Ritz said. "This whole week we've been working on my stuff and then we went out today and it showed."

The Bronchos managed seven hits against Glanzer, who has held opponents to a .190 batting average this season and owns 54 wins over the past two years.

Ritz had the biggest of those in the bottom of the first. Anglen was hit by pitch with one out and stole second before Ritz looped a two-out single to left field that plated the speedy Anglen with the deciding run.

UCO missed a golden opportunity to add to its lead in the third after loading the bases with no outs. Rylee Lemos led off with a line drive single to center, Anglen reached on a fielder's choice and Kennedy Clark blooped a single to left, but the Bronchos came away empty with a pop-up and two groundouts.

Central had another chance in the sixth. Ariah Mitchell ripped a one-out double down the left field line and Mari Scott followed with a single through the right side, but Augie was prepared for Macie Andrews' squeeze bunt and got pinch-runner Mackenzie Fithian at the plate to snuff out the threat.

Lemos and Scott each had two hits for the Bronchos.
